    1995 175hp Johnson

    Please help,

I recently purchased a 1995 Hydra Sports 21 skiff with a 1995 175hp Johnson Motor (ID# G03902134). The first time out, the motor started well but would stutter when placed in gear, I drove it like this for about 2 hours without much improvement, the most it would run was 25-30 mph with high RPMS (5000-6000). We took it out and replaced the spark plugs. The next day we went back into the water only to have the boat leave us stranded, it again sputtered but this time it would not stay on after sitting for a few minutes in a fishing spot (30-45 minutes), the motor would turn on but then turn off after being placed in gear. We took it back home, removed the new spark plugs and replaced them back with the old ones, drove back to the water, this time the motor would stay on but it would not accelerate when placed in gear, it wouldn't shut off but it would't accelerate either. It is currently in the shop, mechanic has so far told me that the power pack was faulty, I was only running on 3 cylinders instead of 6 (unsure if this is the correct term, I'm new at this). My concern is, could I have messed something else up because I ran it like this? I greatly appreciate anyones assistance with this, I am verrrry new at this and am concerned in regards to damage that I could have caused.

    Thanks,

    Joe

The diagnosis matches the symptoms. Once the power pack is replaced you should be good to go.

This is a great forum, it's difficult to find one where someone actually responds, I have been reading it for a while but did not join till today, glad I did.

    Thank you!

Welcome to the BBC. If you do not know the history of the motor it would be a good ideal to decarb it once the repair is made before you put the new plugs back in.

Any and all pointers in regards on how to do this will be greatly appreciated, I honestly don't know the history of the motor and to be honest the guy said it had been sitting for a while, the only reason I ran it is because he took it to a "supposed" mechanic who was supposed to check it out before I took it to the lake, oh well, I am the type that learns the hard way. Again, thank you, lost track, venting a bit.

Do a search for decarb... Lots of threads on it come back...Its easy though. go to dealer and buy BRP Engine Tuner. Take off cover. Remove air box, screw can to schrader valve, follow directions on can. change plugs when done. Don't do it on your driveway or in front of your garage door

That happened to mine a couple months ago and replacing the pack cured it. It ran like it was supposed to after that.

Put seafoam in the gas, that wil clean it out, and run XD100 oil.
