    Starting a cold natured Faststrike

I have a '93 F/S 175 (VJ175GLETR) and it runs great. Problem is when it starts getting cold it is hard to get started. Once it has been started it will start with a bump of the key the rest of the day. I have new plugs and the priming selenoid is working because I just fixed it. What is the best way to get it fired up on those cold mornings? It will fire up if you start it for a second or two before you launch but I don't make a habit of doing that but I have before. The starter will continue to turn until it tries to fire then it will disengage. If the starter would just keep turning I could get it started. No problem at all when it's warm. What is the secret to getting them fired ????

Here's what's worked well for us - Pump up the bulb to fill the lines & carbs and create pressure in the lines. Then turn the key to the ON position but do not turn it to the START position. Push the key in for a 6 - 8 count. This opens the primer solenoid and allows fuel into the intake of the motor. Now turn the key to the START position. It should start right away but you may have to tap the key a few times as it warms up.

This works real well with any motor that has the primer system. We're assuming the motor is basically healthy, the carbs are clean, the fuel is fresh and you have the right Champion plugs.

This new fuel has really been giving us fits around here. The motors sure don't start as quickly as they used to.....

As above but also add, level the engine and hold the key in the prime position and turn continuous till engine fires. Works on mine !!

Make sure the prime bulb is firm after leveling engine, not just before launch on the ramp.

You may want to have your quick start sensor tested.

What does the quickstart sensor do? Never heard of it. I could probably find out where it is on the BRP page.

Championman, I can't find it on the BRP page. Could you tell me the part number so I can find it and what it should read. I have a meter. You have helped me with a few questions over the years and I alway appreciate your help.

Championman............never mind. I did a search and found where you answered the question in 2007 for someone with the same motor. But, I still don't know what it does if you have time to answer.

It advances the timing until the engine reaches a predetermined temp (I think around 105*) which increases the fast idle when cold. You would use no throttle when starting the engine. Just prime the bulb up..

Thanks...I think mine might not be working. I have never had a problem cold starting until this fall.

One more question............on a cold engine, is the temp switch normally open or normally closed ???

Well, checked it with a meter last night and it was stuck open. Championman, I guess the quick start feature is activated when the sensor is closed and when it warms up and the switch opens it shuts it off ? New one is 68.00 here, sound about right?

2ndCajun: Did you replace this sensor and did it solve your problem?

Coincidently, my 150 got it's first dose of 30* weather and it, too, took a while to fire. It took about 10 mins. to fire up. Once it did, I let it warm up before taking off and never had the problem the rest of the day.

I'm thinking I need to check that quick start sensor!

I would look at stator output.

I may even remove the flywheel to check magnets.

Well then, looks like I'll check that as well! I'll break out the manual and research output values I have to look for. Thanks for the tip!

I'll post back with a follow up.

Re: Starting a cold natured Faststrike (MigAz)

Mine has been starting OK now. Seems like that was the problem. Before changing it out it was really hard to start and easy to get it flooded which made it even harder to start. Last time out it was low 40's and it started fine.

Re: Starting a cold natured Faststrike (2ndCajun)

I know mine's working cause it will high idle

for approximitely 2min.Two minutes does'nt sound

that long till your sitting in your boat, on the trailer, in the water

in a two lane boat ramp, pre-tourny launch. I've learned just not

    to make eye contact.
