What did they do to my ETec?!?!?!?

I have a 2005 Evinrude ETec 90HP. Had it since new and love the engine. For the first three years of use, the WOT top RPM's (turning a Viper 19-pitch stainless prop) were right at 5200RPM. This gave good performance when I needed it (although I usually cruise around 3800-4000 RPM) and I was happy with that.

Last fall I took the engine to the dealer to do the 3-year checkup recommended by Evinrude. They did the usual stuff --- plugs, drain/fill lower unit, check water pump, etc. Also reflashed the computer with the latest firmware.

I've had the boat out a couple times on smaller lakes this spring, but today was the first time that I had a chance to make a high speed run down a long lake. I was totally surprised to find my WOT RPM's have risen to an honest 5600. Absolutely nothing has changed physically..... same boat, same prop, same load of fishing stuff, and I had a full load of fuel.

Were there some "performance enhancements" to the firmware between 2005 (when the motor was built) and last fall? I was happy with the motor before, but now it REALLY sparkles.

I think you may have needed that update all along, but with no problems didn't take it in. With the update in the software you are now getting what you paid for!!! Happy Motoring!!!

OK, I've had several more outings since the first post, and this increase is REAL. I consistently get 200-300 more RPM's and a corresponding increase in GPS MPH. This is with the boat fully loaded, all equipment, full of fuel, etc.

Absolutely nothing has changed in this rig except for the 3-year maintenance (which included reflashing the firmware.

I'm considering a more aggressive prop!

Prop it to the upper end of the RPM range light loaded and she will still carry the mail when loaded.

Honestly, I'd leave it and just back off the throttle a bit unless you need it for a heavy load. It's nice to have "reserve horsepower". There is a lot of info that is down loaded to the EMM when a remap is performed. With yours, it is more than likely that with the new software, we can set the t.p.s. pickup. This allows a better flow thru thru the r.p.m. range and works the fuel and spark just a tad better. The dealer ship more than likely set the timing offset about 1-2 degrees, this is necessary to compensate for engine wear. Top that off with a set of spark plugs at .028 and you got a fresh new rocket for the water. Fish and have fun!
