I'm looking at having my 1990 Johnson GT 150 hp worked on. Whats the average range prices for a tuneup, water pump impeller-housing,lower unit grease at marine dealers?
Thanks,
Parts gonna be around $110.00 about 2 hrs labor Depending on locale but figure $70.00 average so gonna cost you about $250.00. Hope this helps.
Thanks, i have it being tuned up, water pump impeller-housing, lower unit grease. Mechanic said on Saturday it looked like it was running rich on i think #3 cylinder. observation was the plug had a black ring around it and could see it was rich by looking at lower unit-prop exhaust exterior.
I also asked him to check the oil injection horn as it is not working.. I rather spend some up fromt than pay for it big time later.
So that is why i was asking. He has been an omc mechanic for over 30 yers. I trust him but curious as about what these things typically cost as he said he could not give me a ball park figure for what i wanted done.\
Thanks, G
Ok i got great news today before lunch. Marine shop called me and said it was ready.
Tune up plugs, timing, carb check, water pump impeller and housing, changed gear oil, fixed oil injection horn was not working and tested in shops water tank and said runs great. Set me back by $436.19
I have known Mike since 86 and has always done great work at a fair price. I might have saved some by shopping around but i felt the cheap route for me is not always the best route. I dropped it off this past Saturday and had fixed by 10:30 am this morning.
If anyone lives in Virginia give Mike a call at Allen's Marine in South Hill
So what are your thoughts about the cost Champ?
Thanks, G.
Sounds great man,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,gosh, I am gonna have to make a 1600 mile round trip to get mine worked on by Champ.................Wish that I had a reputable BRP Tech near me................till then it is phone mechanics for me via Fred.

That is worth the money especially considering the turn around time. Around here, you best plan on not having your boat for a while.

I thought it was a good price and it only had it from Saturday May 10th at 4pm and called me on Wednesday at 10:30am and said it was ready. It is like my car i have a mechanic i have known since 85 and when i can't fix it or need advice he will always take the time to make the repair and or print out the mitchell online tech bulletins they use in his own shop.
I was holding my breath when i dropped it off at the shop on Saturday. You never know what can be found on an outboard. The second owner of the boat took real good care of it.
I noticed on Saturday it seemed to take a little more punch to get it on plane and thought since i just got the boat and motor it would be good to see if it needed anything major.
Turns out it was alot less painless than i thought and 4-day turnaround is nice. I'm going to leave work at 11am and head to kerr for the evening and pick it up on the way down. His hops is on Route 58 just 10 mins south of South hill if anyone ever needs something done. No he did not put me up to posting this but i did because of the great service, good rates, and quick turnaround.
Thanks, G.
Roger, i went and picked up my boat today. He had saved all the parts to show me what he replaced and did. He took 30 minutes of his busy day to go over things with me. My timing was a little off. Water pressuer is now 22 lbs at 5300 rpms. Motor starts alot easier and also planes off faster. He fixed the warning horn. Grand total was 436.19 and i bought a gallon of Johnson oil and two pints of Carbon Guard. He said to run 89 octane and add a 1/2 ounce more than what the bottle states. He said that is what he runs in his own personal 1989 Johnson GT150 and he said the motor will last a long time. Using carbon guard keeps the carbon from building up on the rings thus decreasing lubrication and causing the rings to not do their job and end up the piston scores the wall of the cylinders.
He said it is an added measure of protection for the motor. I said this before but if anyone needs any work and near South Hill look up Allen's marine on 58.
He has over 30 years experience and i have known him since 86 and he did me right.
Thanks, G.
Wish that I had a tech. like that near me................that would be a lot of peace of mind for me............................Roger

Roger, i was lucky to have such a great tech near me. He is honest first and foremost and what make you waste your time and money. I am thankful indeed. Boats run good and hopefully the fish will be biting tomorrow at kerr lake.
