If ya can, get the model and serial #'s off the motor, the guys can tell ya soooo much more.
Find Neveredge, he can give you the skinny.
That is the best flow you can get. If its unaltered. It has high compression, which means 93 octane gas, scalloped pistons, better porting, big carbs, fiber reeds, intake stuffers, and an even fire crank. They probably make about 240 hp to the prop.
You need to mix oil at 32:1 I believe.
My friend had one, it was a beast of an engine. Lots of power, and you can turn the snot out of it. My friends liked not having the cover on the carbs, and the exhaust cut out in the lower unit. Made a big diff in the way it runs. I spun his engine well over 6500. His was supposed to have been a ported GT 2.6.
If its original, its probably worth a little cash. There is always someone on Scream and Fly who wants the good parts. I would love to have one, I would stick a Gt150 cover on it, and slap it on my boat, and make some money.

One easy check is the heads should have these part numbers 325638 and 325639. If it doesn't, then its either not what is claimed or the heads have been changed.
It also just has a fuel pump, not a pump with VRO.

Thats why the #'s are so important, some were hot motors some weren't!!![]()
What kind of boat?
Also, I thought of something else. XP/Gt2.6's should have unlimited power packs. A regular 235 has a limiter at 6200 I believe.
If its on a light boat, you should be able to turn it pretty high, probably close to 7k rpms.
The carbs should also be 1 3/8ths bore. It should say on the front. I don't think the XP ones were bigger then that.

Seriously, that would be a big boat to run an XP2.6 on. That would kind of be like taking an old 327 fuelie out of a Vette, and putting it in a dump truck.
Sorry, I have a real soft spot for those engines. I loved my friends on his Stallion Tunnel. You talking about a fun boat, that was it. I only wish I knew then what I know now, I could have made that sucker fly. I bet it was an easy 90 mph boat, if we would have just had it propped right, and set up.
You know that is tough to admit, I have always liked Mercury outboards, which is odd considering I have never owned one. I have grown to have an affinity for the OMC engines though.

Ya know I've run some of the OLD Mercs and I liked the way the old TOWER of POWERs stood up there on the back of tha rig, but after pulling that 3 piece cowl and rocking the flywheel back and forth a few times to break it loose, on the water, so's I could start her up again I went E/J and never looked back!!![]()
Those motors were notorious for wanting to lock down after a long run!!!!
Have you ever seen one of the XS150's? Those were cool engines.
My same friend had this little red boat that was kind of a tunnel with a flat bottom in the back. It had a Merc 110 on it. No power trim. So he adjusted it where the engine had some trim and running a little stainless prop, that thing would get it.

I ran the boat this mortning all went good except when i went to put it on the trailer the alarm went off it was a constant alarm no beeping i have ran mercs but this is the first evinrude is this the over heat/ there wasnt a temp or water pressure guage so i can't verify I was still getting a stron stream from the tell tale hole. any thoughts?
the head numbers are 325639 /329638 so iam pretty sure it is a 235

I am with you Lockjaw! I love the old 2.6GT/XP (and would love to have an original) I think 1985 was the final year for them. I don't think they were 240 @ the prop though, I am almost certain that was powerhead hp (220-225 prop hp).
A 235 wouldn't be bad on that fish in ski. Ther are better motors but for avg toolin around I think it would do fine.
Those are the good heads. Be sure you use only 93 octane gas.
On an engine of that age, it would probably be a good idea to replace the themostats and temp sensors. My flow usually gave me an alarm if I got it into some hydrilla or milfoil, but when I put those good heads on, I replaced all that parts in the heads with new.

how hard is it to put on a water pressure guage and a temp gauge?

There is another thread about the temp gauge, skip that and just do water pressure. Its not to hard, you have to find a place to plumb it in. That is not my area unfortunately.
You might want to start a new thread if no one chimes in.
