sweet ride man, you picked the right boat and the right motor. Have fun with it and give us some numbers when you get a chance![]()
Burning the candle at both ends.
Nice RIDE, get that thing wet and let us know how it runs.![]()
Gary that is one fine looking set up !Enjoy.
I know you asked this question a few months back. I hope you end up not being disappointed in the 250. It is going to be 3 - 4 MPH slower than the 225HO. The gearcase makes that much difference. The Magnum is so fat that a lot of water gets taken off the prop.
Let us know how your setup goes. Maybe you will not see as much difference in the Ranger as I have seen in my Stratos. I now have the HO gearcase on my 250 and it made 4 MPH difference (running the same 28 Raker prop). I also had issues with blowout due to the Magnum gearcase.
The E-TEC is an awesome motor.
Kenneth
Yea the Magnum is a little slower but it is tough. I smashed a few more stumps & a cement bridge with my Magnum this weekend. Still going strong! Broke two other lower units on that cement bridge in the last few years. Don't ask why I hit it again this weekend.![]()
Won, the bridge is still in the same place....Why do you keep hitting it ???????????![]()
Tried to find it on the Lowrance. Found it with the lower unit instead. No damage except for lower unit paint this time. The Magnum case is starting to show it's age. The front part of the case is really rough from hitting stuff. Might need to snap a picture.![]()
Kenneth,
Where did you get the lightening, dealer or BRP? I was told by my dealer that BRP does not recommend that. Also how much? I would love to do that.
Lower unit aside I am very happy with the 250 I have about 20-30 min on it now and according to GPS I was getting 68.6-68.9 not to bad for out of the box setup. Hopefully it will pick up a bit after the 10 hour mark.
All in all I would give this motor a MAJOR![]()

That is not a bad speed for that boat (if you had your normal gear with you). Was that a loaded condition or light load?
The gearcase is not cheap. You may could sell yours to Won when he finally destroys his to help pay for it. Hopefully, you will be pleased with the performance the way it is. I will agree with Won on the fact that the Magnum Gearcase is solid.
What prop are you running?
Kenneth
I was "sponsored" by Farmers but now Boat US. Farmer bought me 4 lower units & Boat US bought me 1 since 1991.![]()
Kenneth,
Rigged with a 26-Pitch Raker 2. had full livewells and both fuel tanks full anly had around 100 lbs of gear on board, a freind at 200 lbs and myself at 300 lbs.
Oh yeah I almost forgot 28 lbs of smallies. Was a great day of fishing.
Gary L.
It sounds like it may be close to the right setup.
I hope you did not think I was trying to be negative about your decision. I just wanted to make sure you knew it would probably be a little slower than a 225HO.
It looks like you did a good job picking out the colors.
Kenneth
You're right Kenneth. Those colors allow him to sneak right in the middle of the smallmouths.![]()

I thought the bullet nose gear cases really did not do much for the less than 80mph boats??? Dont get me wrong I really like the HO just want to see some real world numbers between the two boats on the Z21.
It's not so much the bullet nose as it is the overall bulk of the lower unit. The Magnum is just that much larger than the 'improved' Lightning gearcase. The more streamlined shape adds speed no matter what boat it is on.
Jason Phillips
But the Magnum has stood up to Won's abuse and is still running, that says tons for that gearcase.![]()
