Definately watch you speed, especially this time of year in Astor. The frog marshals will be on high alert.

Some warnings about the area are in order.

    1. The river has numerous no-wake zones that are enforced pretty strictly.
    2. Lake George is wide and shallow and can get rough in a hurry.
    3. Pay close attention to the channel markers when you first get onto the lake from the south. It is not obvious where you have to go and you run a good chance of running aground if you don't stay between the markers. DAMHIKT

If I remember correctly the river channel swings hard to the left...........and the sandbar that is between you and the lake is pretty shallow

olebiker were you with Jim when he ran aground there last year

was me doing it the next morning.......the one and only time I have ever run aground in my boat while under power...........

was me 30 mins later getting stuck at the mouth of salt springs in a 20mph north wind with the air temp at 32 and having to get out and push my boat for 30 mins in shin deep water thank god the water temp was in the mid 60's..................how could anyone get as stuck as bad as I did while using a tolling motor is beyond me still.............

but winning that day with 2 fish for 10lbs out of salt springs kept me from quiting

and that is corect also...........while nice they still stopped and explained that "no wake" is not the same as "small wake" ..........I thought they were just screwing with me for a second when they yelled and waved for me to "slow down" and when I yelled back "I can't go any slower with out stopping" they came over and explained that no wake means no wake not a 6 inch wake .......no ticket or more harrassing so I can't really complain but I thought it was funny as hell at the time

Probably wouldn't be so bad if a certain gambler owner didn't cause so much trouble for those poor defenseless manatees.

Just a little something else to keep in mind. If you do decide to just keep going and they don't chase you, watch your mailbox for a nice pic of you, your boat, your boat numbers and you're speed. Oh yeah and your ticket.

Unless I am guaranteed a win in a tournament, I won't even go down there anymore. The speed zones when you aren't even in the no-wake zones are out-of-control. You can't go that slow and stay on plane.

I have a friend of mine that had them tell him that he had to then put his boat in-and-out of gear to maintain a "no wake" speed. </TD></TR></TABLE>

thats actually how they made me demonstrate "no wake".........I was laughing the whole time because I couldn't believe it and just said sorry I guess I always misunderstood what "no wake zone meant" and had a hard time understanding the difference in a 29ft cabin cruiser wake at "no wake" speed and my 21ft bass boat at "slightly higher than no wake speed;even thought height of my wake is half the cabin cruiser" but what can you do...............made me really appreciate my lake with no speed limit and no "no wake zones" ............

I think the only reason this was a funny story to me is because it happened once and I was shocked, freezing to death in a blinding fog at 5 mins after daylight in some no wake zone just north of Astor............and as I was idling along playing with my Side Imaging they push off so fish camp dock and yell....................between the 30 degree air, not being able to see 100ft I wasn't really in a hurry to go anywhere............but it would get old quick if I was a regular down there.........up here I just get "the wave" and left alone.........

Re: Lake George and St. Johns help (ol man river)

They stopped me one time coming into the river thru the wooden channel walls coming from the lake. They were stitting just inside the river. I reckon they were clocking me with radar. He asked me if there was something wrong with my boat I said know why? He said I was going faster than an idle. I asked him what he was talking about? He said I was not idleing. I told him I was and I didnt understand what or how he could say that I wasnt. He told me to leave before he got pissed enough to write me a ticket. I said"OK officer." They are looking to meet a quota there I guess. They are a-holes.
