    lower unit oil level

Whenever I changed my lower unit oil in the past, I would fill lower unit up till oil flowed out the top hole. Then I would let approx. 1-2 ounces drain to leave room for expansion. Well, I am ready to change the oil in my 2004 225HO, and was wondering, should I let a little drain out when I fill it, or should I fill it to the top??? My owners manual says to fill it up and mentions nothing about letting any out for expansion. Just would like your opinions, Thanks....Brad

Fill it up and put the upper plug in then as quickly as you can put in the lower. You will loose a little but that can not be helped.

Like DanRude. I fill to the upper hole plug, give it a couple more pumps then put the bottom plug in as quick as I can. JMHO

Now why in the world would you do that instead of the factory method of filling it up to the upper hole as there is about 1" or so of expansion area built into the gearcase?

Re: lower unit oil level (Lockjaw)

Actually......many, many years ago, my dad was teaching me how to change the lower unit oil. He told me to let a couple ounces out for expansion. I could blame him, but I won't. He learned how to change his lower unit oil the same way he learned most everything else he knew through, "the school of hard knocks". He was one of those guys who was self taught. He knew alot of stuff and he could fix just about anything. I don't think he could even start to fix one of todays outboards.

    Thanks much as always, Brad

I understand. From the old timers I learned about putting moth balls in the gas tank for more power and using Epsom Salts in the battery cells to make them last longer.

The less old folks tell the youngsters to put Slick 50 in their oil to make an engine last longer.

Today the youngsters say they know someone who knew someone who made a special chip for their car's computer and now get over 50 miles per gallon. That is kinda funny because my grandfather told me that back in the 1930's someone invented a special carburetor that got over 50 miles per gallon, but the oil companies bought it up and told the inventer to be quiet.

The more things change the more they stay the same.
