    Smoking E-Tec 60HP

Any one had an issue with an E-Tec 60HP blowing lots of smoke when operating above 2000RPM? Dealer has checked all the electronics, oil settings etc and can't locate problem.

Smoking is intermittent but evident at high revs and continues for 10 -15 seconds after slowing to idle or in neutral.

White smoke ? If so, that is steam from the hot exhaust and that's normal. It is seen more often in cool and cold weather.

IF it's blue or blackish smoke, then see the dealer ASAP

I second Seahorse....if it is white smoke....my 2 60 hp E-tecs do the same exact thing....it is a little more noticable when outside is cool, but I can still notice it when outside is 30 C. (I'm in Barbados so the temp only varies between about 20 C and 32 C)

Yep. Same thing happened to me last year, end of October on Kentucky Lake. I made a 20 min. run and when I throtled down there is a cloud of white following me. I panic. Then, I come to find out it is steam.

Hi guys, I really appreciate your responses. I'm very sure its not steam as the smoke is pale blue/grey. When the bimini and clears are in place (boat is 16' runabout) some times you have to get out due to the very strong smell of fumes. If anyone had similar prob can you please provide info on what the remedy was. As indicated the computer check says all's well. Managed to get video of smoke last weekend so will present that to dealer and see what develops.

wHAT we have found in this situation is the VST float is not closing, engine temp has to be correct (clean thermostats) also.

and how many start cycles do you have???

we are on the detroit river were guys start the engine run up river 200 yds shut down ,drift and repeat 30-100 times a day. engine is cold during alot of this period. when the engine is cold it rapid oils itself to protect it self from cold running situations. may not be your situation, but it may help.

    Re: Smoking E-Tec 60HP (Mr.LEAD)

As a new comer to the world of Forums, the level of considered feedback on this issue and support (pleasantly) surprises me.

Mr Lead, Thanks for your comments The engine is 6 months old. Approx 40hrs running. Operating in moderate temps. 15-40C (60-100F). Operation is as you describe several short runs drift then repeat. but most smoking seems to be when the engine is hot and on a longer run (at 5000rpm) for 10-15 minutes. Could the prob still be as you indicated?

    Re: Smoking E-Tec 60HP (Brian D)

Check your plugs. My last trip out my motor (75 E Tec) started to smoke a little when I would throttle up after trolling for a while. This weekend I went out and it got worse. At the end of the day on Saturday I had been trolling for a couple of hours and got ready to head back. When I gave the motor gas, it was sputtering and missing horribly and the smoke dang near choked me to death! Once I got going the motor ran fine, but I was afraid it was going to die for a little bit. When I got back I pulled the top plug and it was in terrible shape. It was very black (carbon) and looked like it had burned the plug more on one side. I think I have a little over 200 hours on my motor which I guess isn't an unreasonable amount of time to replace plugs. If you only have 40 hrs on yours it may not be the plugs, but it's pretty easy to check.
