    Lower Unit Oil Milky

Went to change lower unit oil today, it was very milky. In years past it was a litlle milky but not this much. I alway use the best OMC lower unit oil. Yellow cap. Am I correct in thinking I have a leak? I took the prop off and around the shaft was strings of grass. don't think it was string because it crumbled apart when taking off. How much trouble is it to change the seal? Where can I find good instructions online? 2000 Fitch Ram 200

Re: Lower Unit Oil Milky (tdt91)

first off it probably was fishing line as you have had it on there for a long long time if you changed oil and it has always been a bit milky. should never be milky. I would get a dealer or your best wernch around there to reseal the prop shaft, and to be honest have him do all the seals just to be on the safe side. water in the lower unit is about the worst enemy of lower units as the gears rust and such and then boom. I would not really try it my self as you dont have any recourse if done wrong.
oh and fishing line does crumble if on a long time as the oil and heat degrade it. I have seen so much line on a prop shaft it finally resealed its self but once the line was taken off leaked like a seive.

I think you need some sort of puller to get the carrier out too.

The beauty of a dealer doing it is if it leaks after, then you can fuss at him and make him redo it.
