    2007 285XL w/150 VMAX

Details with a question to follow:

2007 Stratos 285 XL w/VMax 150. Yamaha 25-M prop. Fully loaded and 1/2 to 3/4 tank of gas by myself. I can only turn the 25-M to 5200 and get 58.5 to 59.1 gps. Called my dealer to get another prop - he let me try out two; a 23 Apollo and a 24 Ballistic. I turned both from 5800 to 6000 and never got over 60.5 gps. So now, I've put the 25-M back on and am very frustrated. Dealer told me I was buying a 64-66 mph combo and I can't get it above 60.

I can actually turn the 25-M to 5400 but it chine walks so bad I can't drive it.

Question: Did I buy a 60 MPH boat or do I need to invest in a 23 Temptest or 23 M?

    Thanks,
    Ryan

    Re: 2007 285XL w/150 VMAX (phillipshunter)

My partner had a 2004 with a carb Johnson 150. I know he had a 23" and I think it was a Renegade. Best he could get was right at 61-62 @ 5500 (GPS) during the winter. I would try both the 23 tempest and 23 M. I may be wrong but I think it is hard for a 150 to turn a 25. I had a 150 HPDI on a SX 190 Skeeter (same size as the 285) at the time and me and my partner ran neck and neck. I was turning a 25 M @ 5500 and thats all I could get out of it.
I don't know where we are, but we are making darn good time.

23 M is what you need........if there's a jackplate involved it should be set at 3.375" under pad to shaft.

    You don't have a 66 mph boat...you do have a 63 mph boat with a 23M and a jackplate propely set.

I'd take it back to the dealer and let him get me 66 mph since that's what was stated.

All the posts to your inquiry are very accurate. I had an 03 185 (same basic hull as your 285) with a Johnson 150. With a 6inch plate, 3 1/4" below, 24 raker or 23 renegade, air temp in the 50s or less, around a quarter tank, pushing 5500 to 5700 the best I could touch was the high 62s (mph). Typical load the boat would consistently run right around 60. Hope this helps.

Re: 2007 285XL w/150 VMAX (Chris in MI)

I have a 2006 285 with a 150 carb V max. No jackplate and run a 25 tempest. About 5200 rmps is all i can turn at around 60 mph. Thats all she's got.
But thats fast enough for me. I think if you hitting 6000 rpms sooner or later you will blow the motor.

    Re: 2007 285XL w/150 VMAX (Derekl)

Thanks for all the replies. I know now that I've got a 60-64 mph boat.

Todd, you must have missed the part where I said the "dealer" gave me a 23 Apollo to try when he also said he was getting me a 23-M.

One last question: the motor is currently on the transom, I'm going to run a 23 Temptest in a little while so I don't know yet how its going to do with that, but let's say it hits 5600 to 5700 rpm and 61 to 62 mph, is the $300 for the jackplate going to be worth the $$?

    Re: 2007 285XL w/150 VMAX (phillipshunter)

You should pick up 1-2 mph with a jackplate and the proper setup. I had an '04 285 Pro w/ 150 Johnson. I had a 6" plate and turned a 25 Tempest to 64 mph via gps with a very light load. There was absolutely no chinewalk at that speed. If you have chinewalk, generally you need to raise the motor a little bit. If it's too low, you have too much boat in the water which causes the chine.

Nope.....I didn't miss a thing. You asked what to do and a 23M is what to do....

I'm positive the dealer would have let you tried a 23 M over an Apollo......whatever that is. We run short on props of certain caliber from time to time and have to substitute.

    Re: 2007 285XL w/150 VMAX (Todd Morgan)

I wish he would let try a 23M. He stocks Apollo, Michigan Wheel Corp, and the only Yamaha props he gets are the ones that come in with the package. I asked him about installing a 6" plate for me a few minutes ago and he said he could do it but it would be 700, so I called another dealer and they'll be glad to install for 300 and they are also going to let me try the 23 temptest free of charge.

I've have a bad experience with this dealer and I've figured out why he has fewer boats on his floor than the others around and also why they sell alot of four-wheelers.

He had a great price on the boat but there's no service after the sell.

I'm really sorry to hear that........a dealer who won't service his customers makes all uf us look bad.

It does sound like you have found a good one to do future business with tho!

I have found a great dealer to work with from now on. After they offered to help the way they did, I offered to put their sticker on the boat and take the other one off :).

    Re: 2007 285XL w/150 VMAX (phillipshunter)

I have a 2006 285 dual consol with a 150 etec HO, run 62.4 at 5400 rpm turning a tempest 24 with a full load, 2 people. Jackplate was put on today hope to pick up tommarow and see how much I will gain. You guys think my motor with turn a bigger prop with the jackplate on? maybe hit the upper 60's?

    Thanks Matt

    Re: 2007 285XL w/150 VMAX (mjwray)

I ran the 23 temptest a little while ago. I hit 62.5 at 5700 rpm. I've already set up a jack plate install for Monday.

Todd, is the jackplate going to get me two more mph?

You will not run upper 60's with that combo. You should however see 65-66. Like I said above, I turned a 25 Tempest when I had mine and that was with the 150 Johnson. I had a great holeshot and could run 64 with a light load. I know of a couple of DI H.O. 150's that will run 66, so you will be right in that ballpark when you get it really tuned in.

    Jason,

Where in the **ll is Killen? I grew up in Fayette which is a small town but have never heard of Killen. I even know where Houston, AL is in Winston County.

    BTW, like the last name.

Killen is just east of Florence on Hwy 72. It's in the Northwest corner of the state.

This is where I'm from and finally got back here. I used to work in McCalla, so I know exactly where that is (no offense, but I'm glad I'm not still there).

I don't blame you. I actually live in Lake View/Million Dollar Lakes and I don't know which is worse.

You want to meet up when I get my boat back with the plate next Thursday and help me get it dialed in?

Can't during the week, but if you want me to help out, I'll be glad to meet up with you on the weekend.

You'll probably pick up 200+ rpms by putting the plate on so make sure you have enough prop to handle the extra rpms.

    Re: 2007 285XL w/150 VMAX (1niceBlazer)

I've got both the 25M and 23 temptest. By my calcs, if I'm running 5700 with the 23 now then that will put me at 5900. Now, if I put the 25 on the it'll back me down to 5500. Now, if I know how to use the calc right, I can run at 5500 with the 25 and get +-65mph or I can run 5900 and get +- 64mph. I'm probably gonna play with it next Friday and if it doesn't work to my likings then'll I'll be on here to see if we can get a weekend picked out.
