Bells and whistles, and the 286 is rated at 175 hp instead of 150.![]()

Is stratos just arbitrarily making up their rating numbers??? I thought there was a formula for rating a boat's maximum horsepower. The 285 and the 286 are the same length with the same beam according to the website. Shouldn't they have the same horsepower rating???
someone please enlighten me.
The 285 can handle a 175 with no trouble. They are rated for a 150 because that is what 90+% of the people/dealers will want on it. There is not a lot of performance difference between a 150 and 175 (maybe 1 mph). Motor manufacturers have a lot more emphasis on their 150's than their 175's.
If they rated the 285 for a 175, people would get the feeling they were underpowering the boat with a 150, which would absolutely not be the case. If you want to put a 175 on that boat, you opt for a 286 package, or the previous 285 Magnum package.![]()
