    Jackplate, what to expect?

Considering adding a 6 inch jackplate to my 2003 Stratos 18 XL. What could I expect to gain as far as top end? Currently GPS at 61 tops with a moderate load. Running a 150 carbed Yamaha with a 25M prop (same prop that came on it from the dealer). Motor is mounted 3rd hole from the top. Would the benefit be worth the cost? Any benefit of a Hydraulic over a manual?

I would like to think that will get you up around 65 or so, keep an eye on the water pressure once you start playing with the setup

hydro___ easy to lift in shallow water ( but that is what trim is for) and for different situations like super rough water ( drop the plate and have more control) Manual ---- cost is what 1/3 of the hydro, once set it stays, no pumps to go bad and such. trim down in rough water trim up in shallow. on a 18 fter that is not a race boat, I would just go with the manual and get you and Freddy ( champ) to set it up for ya with lake tests and such. When I sell my land ( close on it next week) I am getting a 6 " rapid Jack ( like the bullet ones super seay to do and change settings on the water as it moves in 1/4 inch clickshttp://www.pitstopmarine.com//...27980 little pricy compared to others but worth it
Oh and probably 2-3 mph and you may need a different prop as moving it will change the way it runs

I have a 284 with a 150 Johnson and 14 1/2 X 24 Raker. My jackplate is a hydro, but for the most part I keep it 3" above the pad. Even at that height the hole shot is great. The only time I have to adjust is when I'm by myself not often. If I don't drop it I get a little cavitation.

    Hope this helps,
    Chris

Neil, save your money and get a manual 5.5 or 6" plate. That's more than enough set-back for your rig and with where and how you fish, you would hardly ever need to use the hydro. As far as top end speed, a plate and a blueprint job on your prop will net you the most!
