    Steering Cable End Cleaning

I know I'm probably the last guy on here with 200hp motor and still have cable steering. But, I need to clean the ends and was wondering what I can use to clean, and degrease them with. Also, what is the best lube to use after I clean them? Does the steering hub itself have to cleaned and lubed also? Any insight will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Steering Cable End Cleaning (Aggie Bassman)

How are cables working? Are they stiff? It is not really recommended to lube cables if they're stiff. Cleaning the ends is simple with some penetrating oil and a wipe down. Take the end off the two cables, turn the wheel to fully extend the ends, unscrew the wipers off the tilt tubes, spray penetrating oil on cable ends and into the tilt tubes liberally, working the steering wheel back and forth, then extend the cables again and wipe clean. Coat the ends with a good marine grease and retract 'em back into the tilt tube, install wipers, and hook back up the motor. If you're experiencing stiff steering, it's recommended to get new cables. or as I just did go hydraulic. I got a great deal from http://www.pitstopmarine.com JR is very knowledgable and will answer all questions. Hope this helps.

Re: Steering Cable End Cleaning (Bassmeister)

The cables seem to be fine, your answer is just what I was looking for. The ends were last cleaned two seasons ago, so it's time for a cleaning. I'm familiar with JR at pitstop. He put in a new livewell pump for me, when I first got the boat a few years ago. They do excellant work there. I actually talked to him about going hydraulic then. I don't have a jack plate on my boat either, so I wanna wait to get both out on at once. Instead having the motor taken of twice for those installs. Gotta find some extra dough (if there is such a thing) before that stuff gets done though. Thanks for the info.
