1985 Johnson 140 help?

I have a 1985 Johnson 140 model J140TXCOS. The question that I have is that it is hard to start after starting it idles very low. When cruising through the no wake zone if just trying to idle through it has the tendancy to die unless you give it more throttle but by this time im giving off too much wake. Planes out good smokes alot when first started any time. Also when I get to where I'm going to fish looks like a fuel mixture being released into the water. What could be my problem or is this normal? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check your cylinder head temps should be about 140*, Make sure the throttle roller is touching the timing cam at the embossed notch and make sure the clear plastic roller is on the cover the throttle roller.
