    Finally! RPM problem solved!

Well, I took my boat to the newest Skeeter dealer, New England Correct Craft in Rochester NH today. They previously called Skeeter and asked for a new tach for my boat and scheduled an appointment to install it. This morning I dropped it off and by the time I returned at 3PM, it was done. I was complaining about running WOT and the tach was reading 6500 RPM's, 500 over the recommended max. I thought I needed a higher pitch prop. As it tuned out, the old tach was off by 500 RPM's at the 3000 RPM's reading. The tech used an electronic tach to get the radings. So, he installed the new tach and it is only a difference of 10 RPM's. The new tach at 3000 RPM's was 2990 on the electronic tach the tech was using.
I'm wondering why this is not tested at the factory before the boat is sent on its way. If not at the factory, why not at the dealer? Being that I have a four stroke and Yamaha and Skeeter both told me I have a rev limiter at 6150 and the motor could not possibly be at 6500 like the tach said without the rev limiter kicking in, thinking I needed a higher pitch prop was totally wrong. I think Skeeter should do a litlle better in their quality control. '07 SX 190 / F150

Re: Finally! RPM problem solved! (Big Al)

Glad you got it figured out. Wish i would have seen your post. I had the exact same problem on mine. I was hitting around 7000 R's when i was breaking it in. Couldn't figure out what was going on. Also the oil light and overheat light was wired backwards, there for the oil light stay on. Took several times bringing the boat back to get these problems fixed. Wasn't to happy cause they would never touch it. Finally in the middle of winter here owner said come back on Sat. and we will get it done. I was not leaving without the boat. Ended up going when it was in the 40's and raining. The mechanic was not happy about having to get out the and fix it and i did not give a chit what he thought. Want to hear more stories. Anyway enough about my rant, just had the same problem. They just adjusted the tach while i waited. All works well now. I also asked it could cause problems with the break in since the tach was messed up and not going by the correct rpm's and they said no. So far so good.

Not trying to ruffle any feathers here, but how would the dealer be able to catch that? You bought a new boat, and until you were a few hours into the break in process the motor wouldn't have seen WOT.

Buying a brand-new boat is a process unlike any other. Their are many things that just can't be caught at the shop and their are things that develop after taking delivery. Working closely with your dealer once you get the boat is key to working out the bugs.

Sounds like you've got a pretty good dealer!

Big Al - Good to hear the problem is solved. Don't be so hard on Skeeter or the dealer. I work in the manufacturing sector and components are typically tested during the OEM manufacturing process. Skeeter merely purchased and installed the tach, with the confidence it was good. Try not to dwell on it any further, but rather, drive that Skeeter like you stole it.

    Enjoy!

KD, I thought the tachs would be precise before they were installed in a boat. Your thinking is correct though. it couldn't be calibrated until the motor is broken in. That makes sense. Jim, nowadays, I don't take anything to be quality controlled anymore. I do like my boat and being the first glass boat, I am still learning about it. It definitely is a big step up from my G3.

Piss,Piss, Piss. If you ever catch fish at the rate you complain you would be on the Pro tour.

    Mike,

When we get together, you'll wish you never invited me to go fishing.

Very simply by hooking the computer to it and comparing the RPMs on the computer to the reading at the tach. IMO someone should hook the computer to all of the motors that are compatable and check the fuel flow readings, rpms, etc. before they are taken home by a consumer. I don't care if it is done at the factory or by the dealer but it should be done by someone. This would not only help with problems with tachs but they might catch problems with bad injectors or other things that could save everyone money in the long run.

Al, I was thinking about heading up to Attitash or Chebacco this Tuesday.

"What are you doing on the Skeeter page anyway?"
    This is the Skeeter page?
