    HELP!!!! 1991 Johnson GT200 won't plane

Ran my boat yesterday and had no problems, stopped to fish for a few hours and was unable to get my boat on plane again . . . . . boat would get half way up on holeshot and motor would start to sputter with RPM's unable to rise above 3000
. . . water was very shallow and very weedy/silty so I drove slowly to some deeper weed free water but had the same problem. Buzzer went off but oil was full . . . Drove back to the launch (fortunately I had not gone far) and loaded the boat on the trailer. . . . . noticed weeds on the inside of the propeller (where exhaust comes out) and along the water intake on lower unit . . . . After work last night I removed the propeller and found a tightly wound ring of weeds that was in the way of the exhaust flow; I also removed the dried weeds from the intake grill . . . . would this be enough to cause the hesitatiation/sputtering? I know my motor pretty well and have been in similar water many times without this problem; I'll be taking my boat to the lake tomorrow to test it since removing the weeds and was hoping someone could tell me if there's anything else I should look for before I put her in . . . . . a friend mentioned cleaning the thermostats in case they got clogged from the silt/seed - where are they? Could it be the powerpack?? Finally, one day after taking the boat out the buzzer still goes off when you turn the ignition key to the 'on' position . . . . . Any and all comments appreciated!!

Re: HELP!!!! 1991 Johnson GT200 won't plane (stretch)

    Here's the info:

    Model: VJ200SLENS

    S/N: G 03014765

    Thanks for not ridiculing me . . . . . NOW HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By the way, I checked the thermostats earlier - they were clear; and I checked all the plugs - they were clean. . . . . . . . . does it sound like the power pack?

I also turned the ignition to the on position (now 2 days later) and the alarm goes off (solid not intermitent).

I'm hoping someone can comment before I take her out tomorrow in case it wasn't the weeds . . .

That sounds like the overheat alarm. When I run up at Guntersville, I have run through some of the hydrilla and got it covering my water intakes, and it would shut me down pretty quick. The S.L.O.W feature is probably kicking in which limits rpms to around 3k.

One of the things I have done in weedy lakes is put the motor in reverse when I first crank it, and give it some gas, and then put in forward.

If you remove everything, fire it up on the hose and see if you get good flow out of the pee hole.

Re: HELP!!!! 1991 Johnson GT200 won't plane (Lockjaw)

OK turn the key to on, if you have the new style horn it will chirp to verify it is working and go off if it stays on disconnect each tan wire on both cylinder heads, then move to the vacuum switch and disconnect it's tan wire, then the VRO's cable and finally the Oil tank's cable connector. If the alarm stays on you have a bad horn. If any of the disconnected sensors stop the alarm then that is the culprit and replace that part. Just on the temp sensors verify you have good H20 pressure, sure would hate to see you toast a head because you had a bad H20 pump. BTW the Vacuum switch won't put you into SLOW mode.

    Stretch/Lockjaw/Championman,

Thank you kindly for your help. It was in fact the sensor attached to the tan wire at the top of the port side cylinders . . . . it was faulty and caused the alarm to stay on and subsequently put the motor into "limp" mode (the mechanic's term) which limits the rpm's to 3000. He replaced it with one from another motor and $90 later i'm back in business.

    Can't thank you enough.

    John.

Just for your info the SLOW (speed limiting overhead warning) is designed to limit RPM to approx. 2500 on your engine if it overheats on either bank of cylinders. You have two temp switches, one on each cyl head.

Glad you got iit resolved with help from CMan.
