can't you just ask the dealer when they hook it up for service? Thought all vmax's digitally keep track of engine history (Hours ran, error codes, ect)

thanks skeeterguy where did you get that from a dealer?
i got one just like that from cabelas called sendec i believe.
I actually ordered it from a Yamaha ATV or motorcycle dealer. It wraps around the plug wire so it only records hours when the big motor is running.

Here is a link to buy a hour meter. Talked to my dealer the other day and he said that the digital ones won't last long under the cowling with all the heat from the engine. Anybody has any problems with this?

Yes, The history is in the engines computer. The problem is that it is almost impossible to keep up with how many hours you put on an engine (without a meter) so it is very difficult to know when it is time to take it for service on proper intervals. I have tried to keep up with the hours by writing down each time I took the boat out. By my calculations I thought I had put approx. 10-hrs.(+/- an hour) on the engine during a particular time frame. When we hooked it up to the dealer's lap-top, I had actually accumulated over 14-hrs. of run time during that time! I knew I was not keeping perfect account, but I was off by a good bit. It's much easier to just look at an hour meter, to tell when the next service is due.
