Thru the hull transducer mount question using PVC

Hey Guys/Gals, I was told by the electronics person at Gander Mtn. the Garmin rep told him the best way to mount a thru the hull tranducer puck is to use a piece of PVC pipe and epoxy it to the bilge area where you want the tranducer ( straight up ). Put the puck down inside the PVC pipe then fill the pipe with mineral oil and cap it off. Has anyone ever heard of this or tried it????????Grubby

Never heard of this before but what are you supposed to do with the cable running off of it? I don't see how you are going to get it sealed in there.

I was thinking the same thing. Seems like it would be very hard to keep the mineral oil in it.

I don't see that as a problem a hole drilled at the top and notched out for the cable then siliconed. The top is caped so the oil will stay inside the PVC pipe since it is epoxyed to the bottom. I just wondered if it would send a good signal. I emailed Garmin and I am waiting for their response. If this will work it would save you from chipping off old transducers if you want to change units down the road.

The only reasoning I see is that you mount the PVC pipe to the bottom and drop the transducer in it. That way if you ever need to change the transducer it makes it easy.
