Ouch. That's got to be painful to see.
Charlie, it was a lesson learned that's for sure!I decided to write that being that some anglers may think about it next time!

You're smart by continuing to unlatch it once it's in the water. What's it take to do that anyway? An extra 30 seconds? Whatever it is, it's insignificant compared to the time it would take if the boat were to fall off on the ramp!
Do you know the details of the repair?

I always leave it hooked to the trailer til I'm right on the waters edge. Even if someone is backing me in. I'll just wait at the bottom of the ramp and as soon as the boat goes in the water I'll reach under the bow, unhook, jump in and off we go. Maybe an extra 5 seconds.

I usually back down until I can just get to the trailer winch line without getting my feet wet and have a bow line tied to the dock. Then I release the trailer line and float the boat. So far , so good.
I did see a similar deal at a ramp not during winter and not a bass boat. I could only cringe in pain and offer help to minimize damage.

My biggest question would be - why did he pull the emergency brake? Best way to back down a steep ramp would be to put the vehicle in drive, and easy off the brake. The vehicle would roll back and you would have complete control to prevent sliding.
From the pic, that ramp doesn't look like it's steep. Sorry to see that happen to anyone.![]()
We parked halfway down the ramp and he pulled the emergency break until we got the boat ready
