evinrude e-tec 225 ho won't stay running. Please help!

Ok, i bought a 2005 etec and it ran for 5 minutes to the no wake zone and when I punched it open it bogged down and went into something called safe mode. Wouldn't restart. This has happened three times and with two different mechanics who can't find the problem.

SO here I sit with the boat in the shop again and still no cures. Any ideas? if and when it goes into safe is there anything an owner can do on the water or do we have to get towed in and take it to the shop each time? I havd memorized the manual and nothing seems to help me understand this stuff.
Still under warranty but who cares if the boat is allways inthe shop.

In addition to the model and serial numbers, could you please elaborate on the exact nature of the issue (i.e. what happened prior to and after this occurred three times)?

SAFE will only limit the RPM to 1200 but you can continue to operate. Your motor has the capability to SHUTDOWN if a fault occurs that is about to cause your engine to fail. It is designed to save itself in that event. When all sensors have returned to normal, it will allow you to start and operate normally again.

In addition, it has the capability to SHUTDOWN and not restart until a technician inspects the fuel system and clears the code if one certain fault occurs. It is referred to as a code 57, high RPM, low TPS. This happens if the EMM (engine management module) detects an engine RPM of 3000 while the throttle position sensor (TPS) is @ 0%.

Have the technicians given you more information than you provided us in your post?

Go for a boat ride with the technician while the laptop is hooked up and when it boggs down to the safe mode, have the tech look at the <U>EMM on time </U>to see if it reset back to zero. If so, he can call the factory hotline and get it fixed quickly for you.

Ask him also to load the latest software verson which starts with the numbers 94xxx before the test.

Mine is in the shop (second time) for the same thing. Idle through a no wake zone for maybe ten minutes...go to take off and the hot light comes on as well as the rather loud alarm...i think that is when it is in "safe mode"...just let it idle for about 3 or 4 minutes and all is well...give it the gas and go like hell. Still waiting for to hear from the shop.

Bugs, I believe your engine is indeed entering SAFE mode. Have your dealer install the latest software for your engine and your issue will go away.

Here is the info you asked for: 2005 evinrude 225 e-tec ho model #E225DHLSOF s/n 05100432 mfg 12/2004
Here is what has happened so far. It has always been exactly the same.
Start the motor, remove boat from trailer, tie up shut off the motor at the dock.
Then wait until trny start and then start the motor, idle to the assigned area and then idle out to the no wake buoys. Then aply the gas via a hot foot and then go about 2 miles, at 40 - 50 mph and then idle through a long no wake zone (2 miles) and then try to go fast again, but then the motor starts dieing and stops and then won't start. I have turned it off and waited and still no start. start fishing and wait two or three hours and then still no start. Plenty of battery power but just won't start.
Today the mechanic called and said it started up and ran fine. I asked if he idled it for a long time and he said no, but he noticed at idle there showed no water pressure on the gauge and very little out the pisser. But at fast speed there was plenty of water pressure and pisser power. There is also a noticable decrease in the pressure of the gas bulb evn after a new bulb was installed. Once there was a strong smell of gas after I kept trying to start it and maybe I just flooded it that day.

Have your Evinrude dealer contact the BRP technical service dept. and tell them "exactly what you told us". I'm willing to bet you have a bad fuel lift pump (not the high pressure circulation pump). The key piece of information you provided is that you "idled for a long time - 2 miles" before the problem occured.

    Re: evinrude e-tec 225 ho w ... (Cobraboatowner5times)

I have an 06 Ranger Reata with the E-Tec 200 HO and I am having the same problems. While running on the throttle, the engine will almost drop to zero rpm's and idle real rough. It did this three times before shutting off. It took me 2o minutes before I could restart it and it ran real rough. I did not have any audible alarms go off or an engine light. The fuel bulb was real easy to squeeze and the throttle cable was a little difficult to move. I brought it into Midwest Marine in Heyworth and 25 customers are before me (they said about three weeks!). My engine probably has between 20-30 hours on it as I just bought it this last winter. Please let us all know about the disposition of your problems when they are fixed. It would be a great help. -Steve

    Welcome to the BBC Steve...........

I'd be checking that fuel bulb and make sure that it's not defective; it's possible that it's a simple as that.

I'm just waiting on the dealer, 3 weeks (minimum) without my Ranger is going to kill me. I just hope they figure out what is wrong with it. I actually forwarded this forum to my mech in hope it will help him. By the way this is a great web site! Thanks for having me. -Steve

Except if it was as simple as the fuel bulb you wouldn't be without the boat at all...........I'd definitely be checking it and at least eliminating it as being the problem.
