Do our boats just run flat???

I was thinking I'm not getting enough bow lift but I looked at some pics in the "post a pic" thread of cobras running and they run really flat. Is this the norm? Should I not concern myself with bow lift?

With the raker I'm running now it lifts the bow a ton more than the trophy (that was even too big for my boat) I was running in my pics I posted. If you were to run a 25-26 Tempest and play with motor hieght I think you would be suprised. Mine runs high enough now that it's kinda hard to see close in front of the boat.

I have a 201d with a 200merc and it runs very flat, I've been unable to get the nose to come up high enough to feel comfortable running in anything more than 2fters. It has a 6" manual JP now I hope to replace it with a 10" this spring. I've borrowed a 25 trophy and it will lift the whole boat but it still doesn't get the nose up enough. Also the 25 pitch trophy is to much pitch I need to try a 24. I think that one of my problems is that a 200 is just not enough motor for this boat.

illinicobra, what were you spinnig before and what are you spinning now? I have a 23 gade right now. I was going to send it to Mark to see what he could do. I have a 200 as opposed to your 225 and I'm hoping the 200 will be able to lift my boat. I was also considering trying a tempest if the gade doesn't work out. I don't think I could spin a 25or 26 temp though.

Have had same problem with my 190. Called factory and Donnie recommended going to 8 in. jackplate from 6 in. plate. Seems to have helped significantly, but haven't had it in rough water yet. Call Donnie and he can help you. I'm running a 24in. Trophy.

before I was turning 5100 w/ the trophy, not even close to enough rpms. This raker makes mine chine walk slightly at wot trimmed out. A little worse when heading into the wind. Now it turn 5750rpms at wot. Sounds way better. I'll get some good pics of it when the weather warms up, a little cold to run 70+ mph.

Re: Do our boats just run flat??? (illinicobra)

My boat is identical to yours only difference is I run a 225 efi Merc. The prop that came with it was a 24p Trophy. Found it to be a little too much in the rpm category. Ran well on the boat during summer months, but in winter I could peak out at 6200 rpm's which is way over the 5800 max. Traded for a 25p Tempest a45 series. Ran it about a week ago, and found I had my plate too high from where the Trophy used to run. Would trim up, and lose water pressure. It did though bring down my rpm's to where I'm in a good range (not too high). Found that the Trophy can run at much higher heights, where the Tempest you need to come down a inch or so to keep good water psi. The Tempest is a faster prop though. Also, good bow lift with both. Edge probably went to Trophy for lift & steering response. All out speed to the Tempest. Have a 23p high five for summertime play, and it keeps the rpm's at 5800 during summer. Now, you want to talk about lift and steering response. Pickup a high five!!!! Incredible!!!!!!!

Re: Do our boats just run flat??? (CORAL 96)

How much set back do have though. Because 2" made a huge difference in the way mine performed. The onlt tempest I have run is a 27" ant it ran same r's as my 26 trophy but went faster. When I went higher with my trophy the boat took forever to come on plane with all the holes open. So I had to lowwer it back down. It doesn't do one thing beter than the other, 5100 is not enough on top and acceleration is not that great. It works but just doesn't do what I'm looking for. It is probably just too big realisticly. I'm looking for all out speed with decent take-off. And so far this raker is providing me with that. I have tons of h2o pressure so I know I'm good to go up as far as that goes.

Re: Do our boats just run flat??? (illinicobra)

Sorry illinicobra!! Mean't for my original reply to get to the Coral owner, although I guess the Coral's and Cobra's run near the same (More weight with the Coral). I run a 6" Rite-hite manual. Would love to switch over to a Hydro plate in the future as everytime I switch from the Tempest to the High-Five I need to adjust. Hopefully, I'll have some extra $$$'s to spend soon with my tax return. Although, I've got a Disneyland family trip coming up in April, so I might have to kiss that money good-bye!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Doesn't it suck when can't spend certain money on certain things!!!!!!!!!! I have the same problems. I think the biggest diff between the coral and the cobra is the wieght, but I'm just guessing?

Re: Do our boats just run flat??? (illinicobra)

From what I've read the 201 and the coral use the same hull but the coral is a little heavier. I actually think the big sail in the front(read windshield) probably affects the boat more than anything. Plus the forward seat position compared to the cobra where you sit further back. Just my guess, I'm probably wrong. I wonder how an identical set up cobra and coral compare to each other. I'm still going to send my prop away, hopefully Mark will be able to work some magic on it. If not I think I'm going to try a tempest to get more bow lift.

Re: Do our boats just run flat??? (LiveToDrive76)

Props tend to lose some of their cup through normal use, loading at the ramp kicks up alot of sand and gravel that will take the edge off the prop, hard to notice, but over time it happens. My boat seemed like it wasn't running good, took it in and he recupped the prop. Runs great and lots more lift than before.

I would start there first and see if more cup would help before changing props, plates height etc. I think from a lot of what I have read, being a heavier hull it tends to work better with a four blade prop.

Hope you get a good fix and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Let us know how it works out!
