I have a 187 champ. I have a 24 volt minn kota and I am wanting to put a 36 volt motorguide on it. Is this easy to do or I am getting in over my head? Any info. is very much appreciated.![]()

I opted to stay with the 24v to save on weight for another battery. Plus I did not know where to put another in mine. 82lb moves it well.............

Yep 82 does move it well: Steve and I fished together last year and his TM has plenty of power.

I would think a 36V on a 18 ft boat is overkill. A high end 24V should be all you need, plus I wouldnt want the extra battery and bank charger for it. Stay with 24V.
I agree with the responses so far. I had a 187 with 24 volt MG. More than enough!
I have a Motorguide 82lb 24v on my 187. More than enough. Wouldn't want to take on the extra weight.

I had 52# mg on my 186 that did just fine on lakes.
I upgraded to 74# MK for river current. Now I can hold and slightly gain ground in 5+ mph river current.
In my opinion, 36 volt is not needed for your boat unless you have 2 large dudes and a lot of current.
Last fall I was able to fish an 8 hour tourney in above stated river current condtions. I was in the current and on the tm at least 70% of the time. In the last hour I could only hold position in the channel. I was pleased with that result.
Full load and 2 180lb guys.

Last year I took a 101MG off of my 198 and put an 82MG on. The 101 Tour is a much bigger and heavier motor than the 82 Tour. I haven't had any trouble with the 82. I did it to eliminate some weight.
The 82MG Tour would be enough for the 187.
As always good batteries are essential, not just new, but batteries that are designed for the job.
If you go with a 36V system the job is pretty easy, Just takes time to pull the old motor off and install the new one. Will have to drill some new holes for the new mount bracket. It would be wired the same up front, and just add a battery in the rear.

I have a 181 with an 82 lb. Digital Tour on it, and it will make a wake behind my boat. I can't imagine having or needing more power for that size boat. But, I don't fish much in heavy current, that could be a game changer.
