    2nd Bilge

OK - my 198 did not come with auto-bilge & I'm thinking of adding a 2nd pump (auto). Question is:

Is it OK to tie the discharge from the 2nd pump into the existing thru-hull outlet using a Y-connector?

Or should the 2nd pump have its own (separate) thru-hull outlet?

Rule makes a 3/4" Y-connector for discharging two pumps through the same thru-hull outlet, but I've heard there is a chance of backwash coming back down to the other pump...

    Opinions? Experinces?

Don't tie them together if you are planning to get 100% of the output from both pumps... Keep in mind that the ridiculous GPH ratings are max ratings and are not achievable in typical installations due to hose length & inclined hoses (pumping the water up & out).

Add the second fitting Mike. Just put two layers of masking tape on the area you are going to drill into to avoid splintering the gel coat. Once your hole drill bit gets close to hitting the tape put the drill into reverse once you make contact this will help too.

I just installed one in a 198 and used the dedicated wiring for an auto pump which is laying in the bilge, and installed another thru hull fitting. However, when finished, I found that both pumps will not come on at the same time. They will come on individually. Weird, and I have not figured out yet why they won't come on together.

After you get the pilot hole for the hole saw drilled, you can also run it backwards until your are through the gel cote to keep it from chipping. Use a drum sander for your drill to finish out the hole. Just a little insurance in addition to the tape.

Could be a difference in the amount of travel needed to activate the auto switches on the two pumps, pumps or boat not level and probably 2-3 other reasons. Keegan shouldn't be gettin no water in the bilge of that boat anyway unless he's out on TB when the wind is "Howlin" ...
