This is not uncommon. Try turning pump nozzle upside down, but pump slowly if it does not want to go in. If you go back a few pages here in the forum, you will see more posts about this same problem....with some strange solutions...I had the same problem with my 187. I just held the handle and pumped slowly....
i think i heard someone say find a gas station on hill![]()
If you look on your fill inlet on the inside buy the battery's you will see two lines one is for fuel and one will be for venting. There is a very good chance that the vent line is kinked now its a pane in the butt but take the vent line off and re-cut it to fit. I did this to my 97 202 and now I can pump gas at full speed at any pump.
The fuel fill on the 196 is on the side of the boat...the fuel tank is under the seats. Not sure there is any way to get to the vent line....
I tried one of those suggestions. Open the fuel lid on the way to the station, and it works for me every time.![]()

If the tank isn't venting to allow fuel in....
is it possible that the motor is straving for fuel as well? werid question I know...but......
If your motor was starving for fuel you'd know it. Two different situations. There is no connection between how fast your fuel tank will accept fuel and how fast your motor is getting its fuel....Don't worry!!!!!!
That's not entirely true Lea...... Ever heard the term vapor-lock..... The very same thing happens when a motor tries to draw fuel from a cell/tank without proper venting. If air cannot replace the fuel quickly enough being drawn from the tank this will result in a vaccume being formed in the tank, and the result will be starving the motor of fuel.... Very much the way a vapor-lock situation happens in hot weather.......

Yes I have heard of vapor lock, but never in this situation. I have never heard of a motor being starved because it is difficult to get fuel into the tank... I am referring to our Champions...not to any other configuration.
When you get to the pump stop and put a 2x6 on the ground in front of your trailer tires on your fuel fill side. Then roll fwd until the wheels are on the board. I had the exact same issue with my Champion and have it again with my Stratos. Works great, no more back flow!![]()
