    Trim Gauge Fuse??

    1985 Johnson GT 150

My trim gauge went haywire this weekend on me, so I began stepping through the troubleshooting guide and narrowed down to my sender unit. When I started pulling the sender unit I found the sender unit wires were pinched almost in two and grounding out on the motor base (where the wires go through the cowling).

So, I wired everything back up, and now my gauge, which had worked before, doesn't.

Like a big dummy, I did this all with live wires and I'm afriad I 'fried' my trim gauge.

    Is this possible?

Is there a fuse? A fuseable link?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

More than likely fried the sender. Nope no fuses. New sender will cost you about $90.00.

Crud. That sounds like something I'd do.... I'll never blow a fuse or shear a pin. I always go for the total screw up.

    Thanks Champ!!!!!

    Re: Trim Gauge Fuse??

    Guys,

I hooked a low ohm meter up to the sender unit last night and this is what I got:

3-4 ohms with sender all the way open.

132-137 ohms with sender all the way closed.

It had a steady ~linear resistance through the entire length of the pull.

    Does this tell me anything?

    Thanks!!!!

Oh, and on the back of my trim gauge, there is a little resistor? between the "I" post and the "S" post. (Ignition-purple-12 volt post, and the Sender-white/tan post). This little baby gets real hot to the touch. Does that mean anything?

    Thanks!!!!!

It means too much current is flowing through the resistor. Check for a stray ground.
