How is this even remotely legal?

Some things I will never understand I guess. I just can't see how a police chief openly ignores state law like this. Makes no sense to me.
Saw this on another site and I am just stunned.

I don't really know what to say! The main job of the police is to enforce the law, Right?????

Kind of my thought too. I just can't see why they think someone driving illegally deserves their car back. I would think legal citizens and actual taxpayers would be the priority here. Maybe if they lost their cars as the law dictates it would curb some of the illegal drivers. I know law enforcement gets to use discretion but this seems like a big problem that needs to be enforced in order to get it under control.

I don't get it either. I'm hoping that the state will shoot this down, but it is california though so who knows.

My biggest concern is.......The arrogance that they can interpret the law in a way that they deem "fair". I can't just pick and choose the laws that work for me and ignore the one's that don't!

If I said what I wanted to say, your thread would get locked quicker than a drunk on a pint. Actually, nothing really needs to be said as the article explains everything with one work....California!

But if they impound their cars then the illegal immigrants won't be able to get to work. Sounds good to me. Here's an idea, you've already caught them now DEPORT them. A legal citizen that is out of work can take over their job.

The city government (e.g., council) could fire the guy if they demand that he follow the law. If they do nothing, they either agree with him (and are also in violation of the law) or they are cowards and shouldn't be in office anyway.

The guy actually said that it is about fairness and equal application of the law! How does that make any sense? I would think that equal application would be to not change the law just for the illegal immigrants.

Police Chief Charlie Beck insists that it's simply leveling the playing field.

"It's about fairness. It's about equal application of the law," Beck told a Los Angeles TV station earlier this month.</td></tr></table>

That about sums it up. Fair would be for everyone to be responsible for their own actions, come here legally, and get a license.

out here if you drive without a license and are unable to identify yourself properly not only will you get your car towed but its also a mandatory arrest, the law doesn.t say (maybe) you go to jail. the powers that be(mexican) on the city council and in the LA area have decided to force this on the police.

Re: How is this even remotely legal? (Alan S)

The chief just opened the door for some HUGE lawsuits against him and the county/city... publicly admitting you are not going to enforce the law is negligence, and the city WILL pay for it in wrongful death/injury lawsuits.

Perhaps the chief would change his tune if he personally had to pay for damages, or feel the wrath of the first victim's family after a needless tragedy. I doubt it, though - it's California.

Re: How is this even remotely legal? (Tom G.)

I can tell you even as a judge I don't agree with every law I am entrusted to enforce; however, I took an oath when I took office to enforce them as instructed by the Constitution and State Law, and that is what I do. And I have no problem doing so. If one has a problem enforcing laws that are required of his/her office they need to vacate the position.

    Force it how?

    L.A. has a Police...Force

The Mexicans there don't have a...Mexican Force...and certainly not the illegal aliens either.

I bet there's no WASP Force...no Black American Force...

I always thought...when I heard of California being bankrupt...that they were talking about money...not morals
