I was just wondering how duck hunting was around the country this year. We killed around 1000 ducks at our club. It never got cold down here this year, but we had ducks all season.

For us this time of year it is kind of illegal......Season closed Jan. 9. We never really had a spectacular show of birds. Although I have seen them all winter as the river never froze here.
we killed quite a few ducks and geese in east texas.

Jan. 9th for ducks??? Damn, our duck season in north Missouri ended Dec. 27th. We had a terrible season up until the last 4 days. We finally got some weather and we throttled 'em. On Christmas morning all 4 hunters in my boat had a limit by 8 A.M.![]()
Poor......but not nearly as bad as the '09-'10 season.
I hunt in Southeast Missouri, near Dexter.
A group of 4 of us are weekend warriors in MO - we average about 20 days of hunting total in Nov. and Dec. (season goes out after Dec.)
Last season we killed about 350 (18/day avg)...this year we barely got 150 (8/day avg.)![]()
The soft ducks moved through early - killed a few of them in early November, by Thanksgiving they pretty well all moved on through south. Large volumes of mallards started showing up in the few days prior to Christmas leading to some days of quick mallard limits in the timber...the bulk of them were about 100 miles north along the freeze line so it was about to get even better, but a warmup came, and back north they went. Witnessed an early start to the reverse migration around New Years, as we were seeing greenwing teal for the first time since early November.
As for Jan., I hunt in KY, usually for divers. I hunted maybe 6 days in Jan. and killed several Goldeneye, Bufflehead, and Bluebill....but not near as many as last year.
It was a weird season. That's about the best way I can describe it.

Those days around Christmas were awesome! I had some hunts that I haven't experienced, ever! I stood in flooded timber, and watched wave upon wave of thousands of mallards swirling overhead....then land within 10 ft of me. I wish more than anything I would have had a video camera on me that day...people don't believe me when I tell that story! It was the kind of hunt you dream about!
We pretty much killed ducks everyday. Our best morning was 68 and had many 50+ days. It was surprising, because of the warm weather. I hunt the lower White River and the rivers flooded early in the season, a couple of hundred thousand acres of flooded timber kept the ducks here all season. They were real call and decoy shy by the end though.
Due to the unusually good weather we had during duck season the ducks just didn`t show up like normal but did get a few.

What was the breakdown on species?
I heard many different reports out of Arkansas, that it was feast or famine. A few buddies of mine were in on a lease that normally slaughters them, but didn't do so hot. Said that the river going up and down all season really messed with their location.
Also heard that Louisiana and Texas were having a wild season with all the soft ducks that came down early....they mopped up the teal, wigeon, and pintail this year.
worthless here in my area. I shot one duck and two canada geese. Now the snow geese are here and expect to smoke them in the am.

80% mallards, 10% gadwalls, 10% Teal & Wood ducks
I have some friends that hunt 20 or so miles north of my place on the White River and they had a terrible season, they only killed 30-40 ducks all season. But other guys just a few miles from them said that they had the best season in years. Very strange season to say the least.
Year of the Gadwall...we smacked the crap out of them. If it wasn't for the grey ducks we would've had a bad season. We killed a few limits of mallards but it never got real good.
The last month (Jan) got really stupid...2 and 3 man limits in less than an hour. I had 3 hunts by myself that was over in less than 10 min. You had to be in the right spot and it seemed the winter wheat was the deal this year. Gadwall and Wigeon wanted to eat the wheat and nothing short of a cloud of steel was gonna stop'em. Here is a pic of them after my closing day limit trying to get in the hole:

We Killed gadwalls opening weekend, after that it was mostly mallards.
I didn't get to hunt in the timber this year, because of a broken foot. I hunted a blind on our oxbow lake. Did good, but I sure missed getting in the timber.
