They will clunk into gear to a certain degree, You should shift into gear with authority, meaning not hesitate and let it grind a lot, at idle speeds only!! If it seems worse than usual then you might want to check the l/u oil for water in the oil and metal chunks. Fine particles are normal chunks are not.
I have been having similar clunk almost like I am hitting bottom or something when going into Reverse, feels like Gears are not grabbing, Forward goes smooth as silk, checked the case NO WATER, NO CHUNKS a little shaving residue that was all...1998 225 Evinrude Vindicator, there does not appear to be more than normal play in the prop shaft so I am stumped..
Check that your idle speed is not to high.
If you can't run with the big dogs, just stay on the porch.

It runs about 1000-1200 in neutral than drops to 600-700 when in gear...Is this about right....If not how do you adjust this beast to bring the idle down ???

Mine usually runs around 1000 out of gear and the same in gear. Is that about right as well for a 200
