    1999 johnson 225 ho help!!!!

I have a 1999 225 johnson 225 ho back in March I was runing 5900 rpm and it blew. Took it to shop and was found out it was #2 piston which was a common problem. Had them rebuild the engine all new pistons sleves using factory parts with all the updates, also had the VRO oiler disconected. The oil input on the pump motor was pluged. Got the engine back all was well but right after breakin it started missing and would not get up on plane. Carried it back the regulator was bad. Replaced that. Still was missing next replaced the stator, timing base and also the power pack. Picked up the boat and went out to test and ran about 4 miles and blew the engine again. This time it was the #6 piston and it blew a hole through the top. Replaced the #6 and am in the breakin again but having problems with what a mechanic calls a lean sneeze and Sporatic not idling smooth when you put it into gear will die. All of the electronics have been checked by the manufacturer at their facility on a dyno and determined it was not electronics. Help I am runing out of money the people working on it are very compotient but are at a loss. Please help.

    I am desperate.
The serial number of the motor is G04625B07

    Welcome to the BBC.

From the sounds of it you may want to try another dealer.

I have worked with the same to maintain the 1 year warranty for the motor rebuild. I cannot falt him he has also arranged for the trip to the manuf. of the electronics which I was with them the whole time and they could not find anything. Other than possibly runing lean. But not for sure as they only do the electronics. Their suggestion was to change out the fuel pump. Would this fix my proplem? By the way what happened to trying to work with the dealer and loyality as long as they are really putting forth an effort. BTW I have spent around 6K on this problem please honestly help?

I don't recommend after market ignition parts, I don't think he is looking for the problem.....sounds like he is just throwing parts at the motor to see what will fix it.

Ok where do I go from here? By the Johnson manual all the parts are in spec.

I would (if you have the old parts) install all the old parts and check the wide open timing, if the miss still exists I would use a timing light to see which cylinder is causing the miss.

If you don't have the old parts.. the same will work to check for the miss, when a ignition component is replaced the timing should be checked.

I have seen after market parts check in spec and still be bad.

Sorry it has been a couple of weeks since last. I took your advice and went elsewhere. I was run through the mill put on a dyno and run. The motor was firing properly everything was right on mark. Slow mode was working. It was determined that the motor was runing lean. They replaced the fuel pump one that did not have the VRO and also put in a water seperator. The boat does not miss anymore but it dies when you put it in gear. It will idle fine when you first start the motor RPM,s are 1500 slow mode drops and RPM,s go to 800 you then put it in gear the engine smothers out. You can finally get it to go by holding the throtle at 1100 RPM,s do not move it until the motor starts to catch up then you can go. If you try to give it gas before it catches up it will die. We have also checked the check valve at the tank and it does not have one. We also replaced the fuel line and primer bulb from the tank to the motor with 3/8 fuel line. One mechanic said I should get rid of the motor. I have now spent over 6000 on it and I just want it to run when I turn the key and give it gas. Should I bit the bullet? May I call you at the number listed.

When he built the motor, did he rebuild the carbs too? If it was determined that lean problem was what caused it to blow the first 2 times, I would strongly look at float levels, if he changed the HS jets or something like that...

Yes he rebuilt the carbs. he put them to factory spec's #2 he put the oversize jet in. I have another question the temp sensor wires coming off both sides of the head has a brown/black wire. Someone else told me it should be brown/blue. Is that true.

Finally got it fixed. The new stator was bad along with the power pack and timing base. Wow what a ordeal.
