my 1989 175 hp tilt and trim motor stopped working. i tapped it with a hammer and now its working again . I was wondering if this was a stuck brush or a sign that the motor is going or is the motor serviceable? thanks

If you don't absolutely burn em up they can usually be rebuilt. A good auto electric shop that speciallizes in rebuilding starters etc....... can help you out cheaper than trying to buy new ones.
curious as to how you made out on this? I just priced getting a starter rebuilt and it was only 50 bucks cheaper. Not all that big of a difference over buying a new one, with labor , it would cost almost the same.
I JUST BOUGHT A NEW ONE OFF EBAY FOR 103.00 NOW I WAS WONDERING THE EASIEST WAY TO REPLACE IT.
Trim the motor as far up as you can. put a block of wood between the swivel bracket and the mounting bracket. Trim down so the brackets make contact with the wood. Remove the c-clip with c-clip pliers and drive the pin out with a dowel. Trim motor down to lower the tilt ram. Remove the 4 bolts from the trim unit, unscrew the bolts that hold the motor to the unit. Disconnect the wire from the motor that connects under the cowl, push the pins from the connector out of the connecter and pull the wire through the hole on the bracket. Reverse the process and bleed the system.
