I use to change spark plugs every spring on a differ boat and motor. I was recently informed not to as it may do more harm then good. Any thoughts?

i cant see where it would cause ANY harm to change them every year. i do mine every other year unless i fish a lot, then every year.

I change them every year, usually in the spring. I do a shock treatment with Seafoam and then at the end of the weekend, change them out.
Unless your motor is carbureted, I can't see changing plugs hardly at all. I just pulled one out of my injected motor that was 4 years old and it still looks as good as a new one.
I would like to hear the more harm than good story. On all the carb and EFI engines that I have had I did it every year. I ran engine tuner through them and then changed the plugs. I could buy the plugs at an auto parts store for sometimes less than 2 bucks a piece.
I pull my plugs after the first day out on the water. While on the water I make sure I run at 4000-4500 rpms for 15 minutes or so to burn off the oil I've put in the cylinders over the winter. My plugs are two years old and still look good....so I'll wait until they show signs of wear. I run Pennzoil 100% synthetic and ringfree and stabil in ever tank.

I change mine every year after the first startup in the spring. They're not $25+ like some black motors out there![]()

If you shop around you can get them for about $2.50 each.

I change mine every spring. They still are pretty clean, but I'm not going to gamble that they might get gunked up offshore one day. Preventative maintenance is just that...preventative.
On a side note, if I still used yamalube, I'd be changing them 2 or 3 times a year. Now that I run a synthetic blend, once a year is more than enough. Alot depends on how many hours you run the motor each year and what oil you use. Some oils burn much cleaner than others.
