    Lower Unit Oil

    I have a 2003 175 VMax.

is there a certain brand/type/weight of lower unit oil I need?

Do I need to change out anything else as far as general maintenance goes?

I've only owned the boat for two years and last year I had it taken in for a tune up and they did everything.

    Re: Lower Unit Oil (Gigemags05)

I use either Yamaha's Gear Case Oil or Mercury/Quicksilver brand.

    Remember you'll need
    - 2 qts to fill it up, eventhough you'll not use all of it.
    - the Yamaha sized adaptor (smaller diameter) to fit onto the end of the pump that screws into your lower unit ....... why Yamaha doesn't jsut use the same threads as Merc's and JohnRudes I have no idea.

I'd also go ahead and replace the spark plugs while I was at it.

Do you have a water/fuel seperator??????? If it's not been changed within a year, change it as well.

Other than that, it basically depends on if your "175 VMax" is a HPDI, EFI, or carbed as to what else one might would want to do.

    Good Luck.

    Re: Lower Unit Oil (Ranger391v)

    Mine is an HPDI.

    I don't know if I have a water/fuel seperator. How could I tell?

Also, can I get a pump and an Yamaha adapter anywhere they sell oil?

The only lower unit oil I've changed has been on small motors. I just poured it right in the bottom hole til it came out the top one.

Walmart or Academy sells the hand pumps. They should come with both adapters, and should have the lower unit oil there as well.

I have been running the Royal Purple gear lube

It will be somewhere in the rigging compartment on your boat. The Yamaha ones look just like an oil filter. There are several aftermarket brands too.

As for oil i buy the yamaha brand only cause the dealer is down the road and don't have to venture out into town.

Re: Lower Unit Oil (fishin couillon)

I've been running Amsoil synthetic gear lube for the past couple of years. One thing with the Amsoil bottles....the normal hand pumps don't fit the top of the bottles, the bottle threads are bigger. I had to use an old regular size bottle with my hand pump.

To change the fluid, remove the bottom drain screw, then the top vent screw. This will keep it from gushing out. To refill it it, connect the pump adapter to the lower drain hole and leave the upper vent screw out. Pump the new fluid in until it comes out the top hole, then put the top screw back in. Then remove the pump and put the bottom drain screw back in. You won't lose much with the top screw in. Make sure to check the o-rings and replace if needed.
