    HPDI Hour Meter

I'm buying a new boat with a new 08 225HPDI and want to add a hour meter to it. Have any of you used a Tiny tach hour meter that you wrap a wire around the #1 plug wire? Is there another brand you recommend? I don't want anything mounted to the dash and I'd prefer to keep it under the engine cowl. Any ideas?

    Thanks, Bob

Have not tried one of those meters. The computer on that motor will keep up with the hours.some guys just get the software and use a laptop to get the info they need.If you were to sell later down the road the person buying will probably want a comp check instead of an hour meter. If you install one post a pic for us to see, there may be some others that want one.

I added one to my 225 HPDI and it works great. I ran the wire from the middle cylinder starboard side through the factory loom and into the rear oil/starter battery compartment. When checking oil or other items in compartment I can get a check on the hours. It is a nice unit that only registers when engine is running. I had to pick up longer wire, I think it is 18 gauge. You may be ok with the supplied wire depending where you mount it. The unit is manufactured by Sendec.

Cabela’s sells one that has a tach on it as well. Mine just shows hours which is all I was interested in. I think it is called the mini. It looks just like the one pictured on the Cabela’s site minus the tach.

Thanks Reata.....I looked at the one Cabelas has and it says only one or two cylinder engines...is that right? I thought you had to wrap the wire around the #1 plug wire. Can it be any plug wire?

    Thanks, Bob

Call Sendec and ask them which one you need. With the hour meter you can wrap any plug wire. It activates when it detects current or ignition and this applies to all cylinders. With a tach/hour you would have to select number one cylinder. The mini hour meter without the tach feature will work with any number of cylinders.

Just a thought, not in the same league as what you are looking at but you might want to consider the command link gauges (nmea2000 network) it does cost a bit but you can add anything that you want . When i repowered from another brand of motor i had six holes already in the console so i went with it and then took out the Yamaha command link gauges (tach and speedo) and went to the LMF 400's and 200's. I changed them out only so they look all the same. I love them and you can program almost anything you want although you might need to add a sensor or 2. I have the gauges if you so choose to look into it. Not trying to sell you anything but relay another option since you are buying new.

If you have lowrance electronics get the interface cable and you will get hours plus so much more info like RPM's, Fuel Pressure, Engine Temp, Fuel Economy etc etc etc.... the cable is only about 60 bucks or so.

Never thought of that. It has a LMS520 in the dash. Can I read the info on it with the right cable?

If you use the Yamaha interface cable for the Lowrance, do you get existing hours, or will it start counting from the time you tap in? I'm going to go ahead and order one, and then perhaps answer my own question!

It is total hours . I installed this cable, well worth the $60 bucks for engine hours, temp, and fuel GPH.

Cool, that's what I was hoping to hear. Did you need the interface starter kit, or did the cable come with enough connectors to tie in?

Search the Lowrance site for your engine make, and "interface". You will get several hits on the LEI site that will tell you a lot of info. You will learn what your particular engine can export as far as data.

    Re: HPDI Hour Meter (macinckirk)

I think it's called LowranceNet. I did similar gauge upgrade for my last boat with Etec. All the gauges are universal for Yamaha, Evinrude and Suzuki because of Lowrnces NMEA 2000 network protocols.
