2004 200hp hpdi... One simple question...?

I pulled the boat out and started the motor up for a minute or so last month, when I put it back inside, I left the key switch "on"...Well I ran my battery dead, it was a couple of years old and I think I killed it, my question is....... When you plug in the computer to check hours, will that time register, or does the motor have to be running to register hours????

Kindof a stupid question, but I was just wondering.

    Thanks

That's a good question! I've never thought about it. I'll have to plug in the diagnostic system and laptop to the motor and just turn the key on and see. I've never watched it that close. I'll let you know what I find out. But the ECU records time in rpm ranges so I imagine the motor has to be running, but nothing would surprise me.

It will register the time the key is on.

On a 2004 3.1 L 200hp V-Max efi the owners manual states that any time the key is in the on position the timer runs. The motor does NOT have to be running.

Well that kind of stinks....! So, I potentially just logged 170 - 500 hours(1 - 3 weeks) or maybe longer, depending on how long the battery would last on a full charge (only guages, and whatever the motor uses for power when the switch is on).............

I know in the print out it would shown the time in the 0-999 rpm range, but that realy stinks!

I know it's not funny, but I found out the hard way too. Luckily I caught mine the next afternoon I hooked up to go fish. Mine happened during early break-in, so when we checked the hours, it had 27 logged, but I had only ran it a couple of hours, lol. In your case if you sell it, I hope the new owner buys the story, since I am sure he will question the hours if he checks the meter.
