    power tilt and trim

what is the proper procedure for servicing the power tilt and trim fluid??? bleeding procedure???

Fished all day friday with no problems, went out today and the trim would not overcome the force of the motor. I can trim the motor out sitting still, as soon as i give it some throttle it bottoms itself back out. It will not raise the motor all the way either, it gets to the point where the other piston should kick in and stops.

Does the fluid need servicing or do i have a bigger problem?

I should add that on friday i ran up on a sandbar, I didn't realize i was shallow and when i went to sit it down it bottomed out and stopped rather abruptly

but it worked fine the rest of that day, i didn't notice a problem until sunday morning, could i have just knocked something loose, or forced air into the system???

You have a bigger problem. It shouldn't bottom out when accelerated. This is an internal problem. Get a tech to look at it.

well the yamaha dealership that I had the rebuild kit ordered from failed to call me back and let me know that it was on back order. so I fixed it with less than ten dollars worth of parts from a local hydraulic shop. The plastic spacer behind the o-ring on one of the trim rams was broken all to pieces.

And everyone says yamahas are expensive to work on

Can you give us more details on the fix? Sounds like you had to open the ram cylinder? How'd you refill/bleed it? It must be a common part for a Hydro shop to have it... Were any special tools required?

yeah, i opened both of the trim rams, i used a set of snap ring pliers in place of the expensive yamaha specialty tool, the only downside is that i could not torque the caps back to spec, but they were very loose(out of spec) when i took them off. I filled it back up and bled it by the manual, the manual says it should take 2 or three times of going through the sequence(yeah right).

I just added a post on tilt / trim problem. What manual did you consult? My trim is stuck in the down position so I'm not sure I can even pull the boat out of the water (it lives on a lift normally). I suspect I may have a fluid issue but I can't get to anything when it is on the lift as far as I know. Does the motor have to be up in the trailered position to get to the tilt/trim unit?

does it make any noise? it could just be a lack of power to the solenoid or a bad solenoid(under the hood) I would verify that you are getting power across the solenoid with a test light or voltmeter, both of my solenoids are on the passenger side of the motor there is one for down and one for up. I would check for power there, it could have gotten corroded while sitting. After you verify that you are getting power to the trim motor, there is a manual valve on the passenger side of the motor. You should see a hole in the mounting bracket with an arrow around it. Turn that valve counterclockwise until it stops turning, that will allow you to raise the motor manually, you may need two people to lift it if you have to do it in the water. Be sure and lock the motor out at the top with the manual stop, if you don't the motor will fall right back down.

    hope this helps
