    1998 Johnson Venom 200 Compression

Can someone tell me if these compression numbers are okay on this motor?
    The motor compression is:

    #1 100
    #2 100
    #3 100
    #4 100
    #5 98
    #6 90

Mechanic told me that #6 running lower on that model is acceptable and normal.
Thinking of buying this on a 1998 201 ProElite.
    Thanks!
    Carl

    Re: 1998 Johnson Venom 200 Compression (Apraser99)

all cylinders are within 10% of each other which is good----i just wonder if they all are not just a tad low though--i thought strong compression was around 115-120 but that may be incorrect

the numbers being within 10% show the cylinders are all "wearing" at about the same rate and problably not anything drastically wrong with one cylinder vs. another

hey rude gurus----am i right or wrong

your numbers look good to me
if i remember corectly i belive that #6 will always be the lowest in compression
but the mods will be here soon and can verify that

Agree with the others. My 94 Venom rangers from 105 to about 112 lbs. Have also heard the story about #6 running a little lower. Were these numbers from a hot or cold engine ? When was thelasttime youdid a decarb ?

The lower 2 cyls will usually be a little lower. The #'s arent as important as different gauges will read higher or lower as long as they are within 10% over all with the same gauge!!

Agree with Bassmiester... all look acceptable to me... Did you check them with the throttle plates open or closed?

Re: 1998 Johnson Venom 200 Compression (THE WITCHDOCTOR)

I was not there so I'm not sure. I was told the compression should be around 115. If that's the case should I stay away from this motor?

    Thanks

Give it a a big doushing of tuner and re-test the comp. The motor is solid but a real good decarb will bring the bottom #'s up (maybe). The bottom 2 is where all the junk settle 5 and 6 and are the most suspect to ring stick. The #'s ain't bad yet and I'd buy the motor, but just be aware that you need a REAL good de-carb of the motor.

This motors lower 2 cylinders will be a tad lower than the upper 4 and that is acceptable.
