Reply 2000 175 efi shift problems

I purchased this boat late last year and had local merc dealer go over unit before I ran it. He said shifter cable was slack so he tightened it. The boat was returned to me then on my first launch until I put it in netural it stayed in reverse that was fun.. Motor stars in reverse and in gear. I took it to the dealer and he said the shift pin broke. He accused me of reving the motor but this was not the caseI was standing and I have a hot foot.
Today with a business client aboard the same thing happened very embarassing. Needless to say the day was shot. I want to know if there was a problem with this motor and is this a reoccuring problem with this motor. It seem to shift hard with a slight grind is this normal?

When you first put it into gear after the motor has stoped revving and you hear a sort of grind is normal. My yamaha does that. Change the gearcase oil and look to see if any metal particles come out, if so, you have a problem. Just a thought.

If the idle speed is too high shifting can be difficult. Idle speed should be 600-700 RPM and do not exceed 750 RPM in fwd gear.
