Thermostats

Hey Don, going to clean out my thermostats before the season starts and was wondering is this a fairly simple thing to do, or should I have my dealer do it? Just don't want to open a can of worms and feel like an idiot if something goes wrong. Thanks Don.

    Joe,

Cleaning out the stats is a no brainer. Just make sure you have new gaskets on hand, inspect your discharge hoses and perform a thermostat test on the stats while you've got them out to ensure they are opening properly. One word of caution, DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE STAT HOUSINGS.......torque the bolts to spec equally per the manual. I've seen these threads get stripped out before from folks who think they need to use both arms and a foot to tighten the housings down......

DFI motor’s are going to be a little more of a challenge, can be done but make sure you’ve got a manual to refer to ……..

+1... proper proceedure involves relieving the air pressure (at the port-side rail schrader valve), loosening the rail and sliding it back on it's studs, then replacing thermostat as needed.

O-rings on the injectors MUST BE LUBRICATED with 2-stroke oil (same oil you use in your oil tank) BEFORE sliding the rail back into place.

Retorque RAIL retaining nuts to 35 ft. lbs.

Note: Thermostat cover bolts are torqued to 100 INCH (yes, that's INCH) lbs.
