    03 Merc 250xb Questions????

I have a couple of questions since i am new to mercury motors. I just got a 03 Stratos 201pxl w/250 mercury xb.

I have to feather my hotfoot to get the boat to start. It will stay running as long as i have the key turned and as soon as i let go of the key it will shut off unless i give it some gas?? Is this a normal problem with this motor and will it hurt anything by starting the motor like this?????

My water pressure is like a little constant trickle. I used to own a Johnson and it would spray water like crazy. My water prssure gauge shows good readings at full throttle between 25-30 PSI. While going at higher speeds i will turn around to look at the water pressure and it is still the same constant little trickle that i have while at idle. IS this common as well or do i need to replace the impellor??

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

Need to get it checked out.

TPS settings are most likely off.

Tell tail water stream: use some weed eater line to clear it out. Mud and debri can slow the flow.

New to you motor, i would get a shop manual. Give it a complete go over and check all settings, linkage, air temp/water temp, fuel pressure, leak down, the works. There is a section that tells you how to do this step by step in the manual. If everything is correct i would be looking at the injectors and reeds. Just had Don service my injectors and I replaced reeds va's. Starts with the bump of a switch now. These are a thirsty motor but i would not trade it for a new one.

when in doubt, new water pump, not just the impeller.....get it checked out by a QUALIFIED merc tech...theres a lot of little things that could be doing that ...

btw, hows your fuel lines and primer bulb ?

that XB is a thirsty engine, but it is a BEAST on the water .....

    Justin:

DEFINITELY get this checked out. Have the Sync-n-Link settings, and TPS settings checked. Likely something here is substantially out of adjustment- the engine should start and idle with NO THROTTLE INPUT WHATSOEVER.

Don't confuse WATER PRESSURE (read from a gauge) with TELLTALE STREAM (simply an indicator of water flowing). Although they're both tapped into the water supply jacket- they're very different.

Start with a COMPLETE fresh water pump- recommend Part# 817275A08 as a suitable choice.

While you're having it checked- a Compression Test, and Spark Test would be a good idea. Also verify CORRECT (Champion QL77CC) spark plugs.

Verify fuel lines. See the following post- and read it carefully:
