First time putting "new to me" Optimax on the water. Shifted into reverse, behaved like it was in neutral. Tried forward, same behavior. Just doesn't feel (no apparent tension) right. Seems like something is disconnected in the shift control. Any diagnostic tips? Thanks...
Did you take the motor cover off and see it the cable is hooked up?

I agree- remove Top Cowling, and observe shift cable/linkage on the PORT or LEFT side of engine.
See if it's moving while you attempt to shift.... (don't try to shift with engine OFF, however, unless the prop is turning).
This will help to determine if the problem is in the "boat" side, or the "engine" side of the system.
Note: If cable/linkages are not running... make sure the "throttle only" button (in the center of the shifter handle) is not depressed/stuck-in).
