HELP!! No Water stream coming from motor

Ok. I am in a pickle. I have a tournament coming up and I need a quick fix within a week.

I have a 2005 Merc. 225 EFI 3.0 Smartcraft. Sunday I took it out and noticed there was no water coming from the motor (there used to be). I JUST had the water pump changed on the motor LAST June. I took it to a local service marine and had them change it because it had never been changed (preventave maintence).

    Things I have checked.

I hooked the muffs w/ hose up to it and started it up and no water.

I hooked up a garden hose to the hose fitting (motor not running) and still not water out of the pee hole.

I took the plug out of the garden hose fitting, with the muffs on and water on, with the motor on and still no water out of either hole.

Does it sound like the water pump/impreller? Is there anything else I can check to determine if it is a bad pump/impreller?

Could the pump be OK and there is a blockage in the hose or motor somewhere??

I called the service dept at the marine I originally took it to and he actually said " well we're not goning to just eat it (put a new pump on for nothing)" I wasn't impressed with his answer. He also said the earliest he could get to it was 2 weeks.

    Anything else I can test?

I feel fairly confident that I could change a water pump/impreller. I have changed all kinds of things with my truck...like power steering pump. new rotors, coil packs, etc.

Very well could be a bad pump job. Does the motor overheat? I had a 250XB do this and it was some trash in the pee hole. Took some compressed air and fixed the problem. If it is the impeller I would tell your mechanic to suck one and find someone else. Actually I would tell him that anyway due to his attitude and still find another.

    Ohbasser:

I'm going to make the assumption that you've used your boat since Last June when the water pump was replaced. If you haven't.... a water pump is likely only the beginning of your problem....

Since a water pump can be COMPLETELY toasted in approximately 19 seconds... don't automatically assume that a 9 month old water pump that's failed is the fault of the installer. Simply not a fair assumption.

I agree that it SOUNDS like you have a water pump failure.

Drop the gearcase and check it.

You'll want one of the following ON HAND:

    -43026Q06 Impeller Kit

    -or-

    -817275A08 COMPLETE kit.

DO NOT re-use gaskets or impeller.

One more note: When running on earmuffs, you MUST, MUST, MUST cover the LOW WATER INTAKES at the front of the gearcase. If you don't.... 80% of the water you're feeding in is going right out the front of the gearcase, and CAN damage the water pump.

WHEW!! I dodged a bullet! The pee hole was plugged up. I pulled the hose on the other end of the pee hole and took a small guage wire and cleaned out the hole. I put the muffs on, turned on the water, fired up the motor and got a steady stream of water!

Thanks a bunch for the relpies! You guys are great!
