The best tip I can give from my experience with Mercury bigblocks is to greasegun the swivel bracket after each outing... The swivel bracket bushings wear out much faster than the 2.5 liter engines. I started doing this on my 2004 250 XS after the ones on my 225 EFI needed replacing...( expensive)... Every time I grease it there is quite a bit of water that gets squeezed out before the grease starts coming out... My 2004 250 XS swivel bracket is still tight and I use my boat lots..

It is the main pivot between the powerhead and lower unit that attaches to the transom allowing the motor to steer ...
