    question for sherm or don

    Hello gentlemen,
I've read sherm's tips on changing a water pump on a 3 litre merc.
I attempted to remove the lower unit today and went thru every socket I have, sae and metric, and could not find one that fit the anode plate bolt on the rear of the lower unit.
It looks to be 3/8"ish or maybe 10 mil. but I'm stumped
Do I need a special sized socket, or am I just a moron??

    thanks as usual, scott

It is either a 1/2 or 9/16 inch thin wall socked that will fit it. No special tool needed.

Correct. I've found that Craftsmen Sockets work best (thinner wall than many other brands). 1/4" drive, 1/2" socket is usually the easiest to get into place.

The bolt that's UNDER the anode (retaining the rear of the gearcase) will likely either be 17mm (hex head) or 10mm (allen head).
