Yeah been there done that on my 20CC. Could shot the guy I got it off of. Hope yours turns out as well as mine did. You will definitely have a lot more respect for it after this. A little prevention goes a long way!
What is wrong with your transom? What can I do to prevent this? Enrico

The main thing is taking care of the boat. Keep it out of the weather, make sure the jackplate bolts are sealed good, dont leave the drain plug in it, etc. If there has ever been any holes drilled in the wood it needs to be resealed. Bullet takes great care of making sure the all the wood is sealed so water cant get to it. Its not their fault when someone starts cutting on a boat and breaks that seal. The only ones I have ever seen that had a problem, are ones that were not taken care of.
is the transom sealed from every thing else? the reason i am asking is because my boat is getting a little soft inside the compartment behind the drivers seat but the transom and floor and everything else is as solid as a rock. oh by the way its a 91 17v.
The transom in this one is shot because just as Marty said. Neglect. The previous owner had put a transducer on the transom and I never thought to check and see if he used a sealant on the screws until one day I took it off and water came out. If I had to guess I would say it was there ten years. Lesson learned.
I don't see a reason for ever putting anything but jackplate bolts through a transom and will never have another with any other holes in the transom
