    250 EFI Torquemaster lower unit

Last week headed out for a day on the lake and ran into a problem with my lower unit, it would not go into forward or reverse after heading accross the lake.
Got it safely back on the trailer after a three hour trip with the bow mount and what a slooooow ride back!
got the motor into a mech here in town and we dropped the lower unit and found a broken prop shaft and a gear with a scuff in it.

so, my question is at this point.......is it better to order the parts for mine and rebuild.......or on ebay, I see that they sell aftermarket ones for about a grand or so, or should a guy stick with a gnuine merc unit?
also, when we dropped the grease, out came a splash of water, the mech said that the prop shaft and gear set alone would be close to $1100 and wondering if that is a in the ball park guess.........which direction would you guys take/
thanks for any input you can offer......mn521

If there is an impact mark on the gearcase it should be covered by insurance if you have it. I would fix the torquemaster it is way more durable than an aftermarket case. Price sounds about right for Mercury parts.

Properly repair the Torquemaster. No contest!

Re: 250 EFI Torquemaster lower unit (EuropeanAM)

Just got the quote....$1900.00 for prop shaft, gears and clutch
He mentioned he has a torquemaster that was a new replacement that has a total of 20 hours on it off from a opti that he will warranty for a year for $1200.00
I also called ins. Co. and adjuster is suppossed to contact me tomorrow, so I guess will know something.
The unit with twenty hours does not sound bad, he said it was about 3600 new and came off his friends boat......probably wiser than the after market?

A new torquemaster would be closer to 4500.00 from Mercury.
