    clear water

whats the clearest water you have ever fished for bass?? a guy told us about these ponds here in port arthur to try..so me and my stepdad went to find them this evening...

the one we started in, the water was crystal gin clear...blueish tint, but you could see the clay bottom and every leaf or stick on the bottom in like 4 to 6 or 8 feet deep...fished it for a few minutes with ZERO confidence....did enjoy being able to see how my smallie beaver looks coming through the water though...learned a new trick on working it... anyway...no bites, didnt see any life...correction, i saw 1 little perch about 2 inches long, and maybe a half dozen tiny minnows...i went around one side, my old man went around the other side...he gave up, i gave up, i headed back to the truck, he was closer to the truck...i got to the truck, no stepdad...im like huh?? where the hell did he go??

anyway...my phone rings, i answer, he says "hurry up and get over here by the truck!!!!!!!!!!!!" i say, "im right here at the truck, where you at??" he says, "im right here, look over here..." thats typical for him, hes kinda weird...haah...i look all around, and i see him waving his arms through some bushes...i go over to him, hes at this other pond....same color/kind of water...hes watching 4 bass, about 2 pounds each playing ring around the rosey or something along that line...

i walk up, hes crashing his brush hog in the middle of them over and over and over, no bite...i had broke my line off on a limb in the other pond, so i have my rod in one hand and my beaver, hook, and weight in the other hand...i real quick tie the hook onto my line forgetting to put the weight.....i rig the beaver weightless, and pitch out passed them and drift it into the middle of them, immediately get bit, inhaled/exhaled all in one fluid movement....i do this several times, getting bit each time, cant get a hookset on them....

so, i start to thinking.....these fish aint spooking, theyre not leaving this spot...they are bedding or guarding fry or something along that line....but 4 together?? never heard of that.... anyway, only thing in my pocket are black n blue beavers, so i dig in the old mans bag, (he carries weird stuff).....grab a litttle 4 inch junebug finnesse worm, i throw it on my hook, wacky style....toss it out there....bite, miss, bite, miss....hmm...i scratch my head....all the while ive noticed they keep nosing down (all 4 of them) to this one spot about the size of a softball....ahha!!! sweet spot!!! so i toss the wacky worm back out, let it drift into that sweetspot, and just let it sit...i just fluttered my rodtip...flash!!!! hookup with a solid 2 or 2 1/2 pounder... nice...first clearwater bass ive ever caught......

point of my story......screw that clear azzed water...thats too damn much work...the florida guys can have that crap....give me some stained water and some grassbeds or some laydowns, and ill be happy!!!!!!!!

    Re: clear water (marshman)

I hate fishing water that clear...I would love to build confidence sight fishing but kind of hard around here. I much rather blind cast in areas where I think they should be.

+1 I wasted half a day durin a TX throwin at what i thought was a 7+ lb bass, When i caught it it was 4.8 Then i struggled to catch 4 more, I got my ass kicked. Learned my lesson, Move on and come back later.

Some of the best fishing days I have had were in clear water. In concordia, the further back into the trees you go, the clearer the water is.. I love it back there.

    Re: clear water (marshman)

My experience last week with clear water. Spend the first 2 days on Caney Lake, water was crystal clear, could see the bottom in 6-7ft of water. Prolly made 6000 casts. I was in the the boat with 2 other guys for the first 2 days. They were catching a few fish, I didnt even get a bite Needless to say, I was ready to come home After some investigation, found that they were both throwing Fulocarbon line, I was throwing Braid. Made a run to the Walmart got me some Fluro & BANG, first 25 cast I made I had a 2lb fish & a 6.13lb fish. Clear water = Fulorcarbon for me.

Caney is very clear for this aerea. Usually you can see 6-7ft. The clearest water I have ever fished you see about 30ft . Lake Norfork in Northern Arkansas.
