Lower unit for 250xb.

Don. I was at the lake today and I noticed the lower unit made a grinding sound after I took the boat off the trailer. I tried to place it into reverse and nothing. I shut the engine down and loaded the boat back on the trailer. When I got home I checked it out and the prop shaft seemed to have to much play. I removed the prop to find that the retainer ring that holds everything inplace was loose. It had either backed out or was blown out. I removed it and looked at the gears and they all looked like nothing was wrong with them. My question to you is what would have caused this to happen. and how much should it cost to fix. Btw the serial # on the lower is G01H797 Rt 1.75 Thanks Jamey

Any number of possible causes.... from a weakened retainer, broken retainer tab washer, internal failure, or even a high-thrust shift into reverse (especially if combined with one of the above).

Almost "certainly" the failure occurred when you shifted to reverse....

I'd be more than happy to go through it for you, and determine WHAT happened, repair accordingly, and give pointers to avoid a repeat occurance (if applicable).
