blown fuse on coil drivers? 07 225 xs

I was on the lake today and was running about 4000 rpms and my engine just turned off. I found a blown fuse 20amp for the coil drivers. My question is what caused the fuse to blow -- short to ground? harness? Could it be a purple ignition wire to ground? Where would I look for these issuses. Any help would be great!

    Please READ CAREFULLY.

You need to get your engine in to a Mercury Dealer, asap. Disconnect the battery, or turn off the battery switch NOW... and do not turn the key on.

There have been some issues with coils, and one of the possibilities is a "shorted" coil (which can, in some cases, result in a damaged PCM or Computer). Although "shorted" coils are not extremely common, it does happen, and a Service Bulletin has been published to address this.

Your dealer can reference Service Bulletin# 2007-03 (Racing) or 2007-25R1 (Outboard Line). The same information is contained in both bulletins.

I dropped the boat off at the dealer and told the service manger about the s.b.2007-03. After the service manager investigated the info his replay was the info is for the 250x and the 300x engines not the 225x. He tested the pcm and said the circuit was good and was not open. still waiting to hear about the drivers?
Does this sound correct or not? Can the pcm test ok and still fail ?

2007-25R1 is the bulletin that applies "specifically" to your engine.

I have yet to see a PCM "test" good that was indeed bad... but that DOES NOT, by any means indicate that it "can't happen".

Drivers? The above bulletin includes a test for the coils to confirm they are not shorted- one of them likely is! May also need to look at the PCM fault history (it may indicate "EST #(bad one) Short").

And of course, once that coil is replaced, a new fuse.

Got the boat back and went right to the lake. Drove around the lake for about hour at the same failing rpms and at top speed no issue. I stopped and restarted many time and no faults? The lake was even a little windy and things worked out ok. Do you think if a coil was bad it should have showed it self, right? I would also like to Thank You for all of your in put and have a Good Thanksgiving .

No coil was replaced? All I can say is that in my experience, 95% of "blown fuses" occur "for a reason".

Nothing was replaced but the fuse... scary Yes I agree, This is why I feel the problem is going to show itself when I'm in the middle of the lake. When all this happened, I started the engine and thought I heard 2 beeps on start up (Not sure) got on plane and went 2 miles before the fuse blew. Can I read the S.B about my engine? My engines #1B456--- did not know if it is smart to put the whole #, or should I send you a private PM.
