I was wondering if any of you loosen your drag while fishing with braid? I'm wondering if I need to when flipping because several years ago I broke a rod setting the hook on a fish with braid, so I don't want to make the same mistake. Thanks![]()

I don't back off the drag, but you have to be conscious of the hook set as in you don't need to cross their eyes. I have straightened hooks, broke rods and all that as well. That said, maybe the drag is a valid point.
I wouldnt back off on a drag. In ks, youre probably not gonna be settin the hook on a fish that wont just fly out of the water![]()

that being said, I still wouldnt back off the drag, If I did back off it would be to the point I still had no slippage on the hookset

Maybe with braid a half snap set instead of a snap set would be better. Yes that was right off the top of my head. Instead of doing your full snap set, after you drop the tip, dont bring it as far back, say 10 or 111 o'clock, My sets usually go to about 2 oclock initially.

Yes, I do back off the drag a bit and just control the spool with my thumb. I would rather be consistent with the hook set and vary the drag when using braid.
I always back off the drag a bit when using braided line. I only made the mistake of not doing it one time. I broke a rod on a false bite. Must have been a log!![]()

A fast action, heavy power stick will help some of that shock that breaks rods with less tip. Braid or not, a poor hookset due to slipped drag is still a lost fish.

Thanks for the help. Guess I'll find out this weekend. I think I'm going to keep the drag tight and just not set the hook to hard.![]()
